I made brew notes. Please critique!

Lately I've been keeping track of equipment used, for things that I have more than one of, to help in troubleshooting. E.g., I ferment in corny kegs and serve in corny kegs. I've had a few batches where something went wrong and I was suspecting a keg not fully sealed, etc. Now I label them...

    Spunding valve question

Well, I was very curious so I hooked up a ziploc bag over the valve as a makeshift balloon. In a little over an hour it filled the quart bag with CO2. Now I'm waiting for the zipper seal to pop. :-) Next step for me is to figure out a way to hook up a bubbler.

    Spunding valve question

I've been using a spunding valve foa while but have never noticed how it releases gas in practice. Never sat around and watched and listened. Does anyone know whether it releases gas in bursts or as a slow trickle? I've got an IPA in day 7 of fermentation and am curious whether I could...

Visiting Frankfurt, what local beers to drink? EDIT: Frankfurt lacks local beers, so I drank these..

I can't speak to Frankfurt specifically, but when in other places in Germany and neighboring countries lately, I've enjoyed the braufrisch "brewery fresh" versions of bottled beers.

    keggling keezing and spunding

I've done it both ways, and both ways work. There's enough yeast still to get the last few points down. Raising the temperature a bit in the secondary also helps. BTW, I do it almost exactly as you describe, but with the Robobrew instead of BIAB. Also, I use a water filter housing as a...

    Closed transfer modification

Is that vessel pressure-rated? If not, and it would fail before the PRV on that fermantasaurus-type lid would release pressure, then watch out! Edit: Looks like it's a milk can, so not pressure rated. If I were you, I'd take the PRV out of that lid and throw it away so you never run the risk...

Anyone using the mash and boil or robo brew?

I haven't used mine this much, I've had no troubles with it, other than the immersion chiller not extending far enough down into the wort. About 1/3 of the coils are not immersed during a 5-gallon batch, which is disappointing. Otherwise, I love it.

    Noob question

Check out Mitch Steele's book on IPA regarding this, if you haven't already. According to the book, hops definitely do have a preservative effect, but that's not why they were added to beer going to India. They were also added in the same amounts for domestic beer. Apparently the term IPA was...

Quick-disconnect airlock for corny keg? (is there a better way?)

As long as you're careful to disconnect before cold crashing, to avoid suckback. It's kinda easier to forget that kind of thing when fermenting in kegs.

Quick-disconnect airlock for corny keg? (is there a better way?)

I used to use a short piece of vinyl tubing over the 1/4" threads of the QD connector, going to a portion of racking cane from the bent part, and then another short piece of vinyl tubing to connect up to a bubbler.

Combo keg/bucket/carboy/KETTLE washer - need advice please

If you search the forums for Superior Pump 91250 you'll find a few ideas. I made one using a 360 degree CIP spray ball with 1/2 inch threaded fitting from eBay (Exa-Spray-0102), one of those pumps, and some pvc fittings. I put the rig in a 2.5 or 3 gallon bucket (with lid and handle) from...

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Thanks for the feedback. Next experiment: pour the condensate on the lawn, and see if it greens up. ;-)

Boil kettle condenser - no overhead ventilation needed

Love the steamslayer idea and am preparing to rig one up, but having hesitation about the smell. Any of you folks who are operating one: how about putting a little oxyclean powder into the collection bucket periodically, like a pinch every 15 minutes? The hot water should easily dissolve it...

    thoughts on Robobrew equipment

Got one and love it so far. Pump is great. Boil is adequate for my purposes; no need for a gigantic rolling boil here. Takes some time to heat up, but if you're patient it's not an issue. I love how compact it is, and easy to clean.
