    Lager vs Kveik: The Test

I'm sorry you and your family are feeling poorly. That sounds like a horrible cocktail of viruses, but it is important to remember that humans are constantly transiently, or permanently, "colonized" by numerous viruses, including many that cause disease. Mostly likely a bunch of healthy people...

What was your first beer… ever?

This post brought back some memories. When I was about 5 (1976) I used to finish the last drops of my dad's bottle of beer. It was Charrington Toby in a stubby bottle, brewed by Carling in Canada. I liked it though... ...

    Cold IPA

I agree with the objection to naming, but I just attribute to a marketing ploy to make beer look new and different. There is a brewery near me that has been making an IPA for somewhere near 5-6 years, maybe more, and because they are a German beer focused brewery make their IPA with lager yeast...

    Dry Hopping West Coast IPA

Good note on BRY-97. WCIPAs are my goto and I have tried many, many different yeasts, including a bunch of "private collection" strains. I ended up converging on BRY-97. Not only it is dry and therefore really convenient but it gives really good results while being versatile (i.e. the...

    Escarpment Labs - Thiol Libre

Any updates a week later? I ordered some myself and have a starter going as we speak. Planning on doing a split 30L batch. Half will get all Thiol Libre, the other half will be a co-pitch of Thiol Libre with Verdant (aiming for some extra yeast esters). Mash hopping with Saaz, whirlpool with...

    Escarpment Labs - Thiol Libre

Haha, well, sort of, I guess. This strain IS different than the US one, which was specifically created by genetic tinkering. This one in this thread was made differently. If anybody wants to call it GM, I'm not going to argue with that, because it was made with intentional breeding, and so IS...

    Escarpment Labs - Thiol Libre

Depends on how you personally want to define GM. This one was made by traditional yeast breeding, no specific tinkering with genes by molecular biology. It is a cross of kveik and a wild yeast. Not really sure what type of yeast that would make it.

Looking at buying UniBrau (BrauSupply) - Pump Hook Up Question for users

^^^What they said. I also have a Unibrau with the pump directly connected to the kettle. Works well this way because the pumps are not self-priming and it reduces the amount of hoses etc. It is not, however, a necessity of the system.

How does Low oxygen brewing work with Aerating the wort?

This is my suspicion as well - any follow ups have been lost in the purgatory of negative results.

How does Low oxygen brewing work with Aerating the wort?

Haha, yeah, I am an academic scientist but given it was a research project towards completion of a graduate degree I would be forced to call it a dissertation or thesis, irrespective of my issues with the design and quality. I understand the issues with experimental design in a production...

How does Low oxygen brewing work with Aerating the wort?

That thesis (which is a dissertation) lacks a key control - a no O2/no olive oil batch. It is quite possible that such a batch would perform the same as the olive oil batch(es), which did ferment out more slowly. Oddly, I can't find a formally published version of that study. There does not seem...

    Braumeister, Brewtools or Grainfather?

This looks like a reasonable place to relay a personal anecdote. I recently moved on from a Grainfather. Not because I didn’t like it – I really did like it – but because its days were numbered. It received a lot of mileage since 2016 - I started to have to replace parts, the plastic base was...

Can Cask Beer be Mimicked in something besides a Pin or Firkin?

Haha, indeed! That night the keg got killed, but other times I have done it I have enjoyed the keg over many weeks.

Can Cask Beer be Mimicked in something besides a Pin or Firkin?

^This. I have done naturally carbonated, low CO2 bitters served from a keg with an RV hand pump (head space replace by low CO2 pressure) that fooled Brits (2 of them) that used to work as bar tenders hand pulling beers in UK pubs. It works pretty well. The only downside, which I might get flak...

Returning to Brewing BIAB DigiBoil Capacity Question

If one is going to go BIAB in a Digiboil, why not just go with something like an Anvil Foundry, which is basically BIAB with a super sturdy, last forever, SS "bag". Issues with volume/gravity are then easily solved with a pour-over sparge.. ..even with cold-water is fine.

Beer may be good for your health!

The paper I posted even discusses this meta-analysis and the misclassification. It was one of their justifications for the re-investigation and more thorough experimental design/analysis. They still got the J-curve. The paper is open access, so anyone can read it. Edit: Geez, I just realized...

Can a freshly cleaned part be called sanitized?

I'm not familiar with that. I think the stuff is called One-Step.

Can a freshly cleaned part be called sanitized?

Yes, after reading my post I can see how I caused this confusion. By default, anything that is good at cleaning a surface should also leave it largely sanitized. My understanding is that there are some oxygen based cleansers that are no rinse. These should also function just fine as sanitizers.
