    Oxiclean Question

Just do not leave anything you are cleaning in the solution for more than a day or so...it will leave a residue. I had such a bad residue problem (encrusted actually) I had to use a strong vinegar solution to dissolve the residue. Ugh. Lesson learned: Use it, but don't let stuff sit in it...

    Brewing Software - Comments Please

When will a demo be available? It is unlikely that I would buy another brewing software package without a demo. Thanks. BrewStef

    Yeast Starter Method...

Erly's are designed to handle the heat, so why wouldn't you boil in the flask? The only issue I have had is getting the DME in the flask (it likes to clump up in the funnel) when the water has boiled. Now I add the DME to warm water...no steam, no clumps. Cheers!

    Who wants free beer?

It should ferment more in the secondary, though it will not be as visible (less bubbles, no krauesen. Personally, I never transfer to secondary until after a week. The reason for this is that sometimes when you transfer too early it can cause a stuck fermentation as you are removing a fair...

    Yeast Starters??

Ok. What about if you use a stirplate to get maximum growth out of your starter AND using Oxygenation stones? Is this bad? Will you get oxydized beer since you have a massive starter cell-count? This is getting confusing to me. I just got a stirplate from Yuri Rage (awesome device), and...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Awesome, thanks for the clarification. I am going to make some of yours...spontaneous fermentation does not really appeal to a control freak like me. Cheers :tank: BrewStef

    Man, I love Apfelwein

Hi Ed, Is Apfelwein the same as Apfelmost? My grandfather in Austria used to make Apfelmost and have been looking for a recipe since they don't have email yet in the hereafter. My father THINKS he just used apple juice and spontaneous fermentation, but he is not sure. Cheers. BrewStef

Taste it, then you will know. I bet it is fine.

    Pom mead

How are you adding the honey? Do you add it directly and stir gently, or do you mix it with a bit of water? Please do let us know how it turns out. Thanks to you and missing... Stefan

    Pom mead

Anyone have a good pom mead recipe? I love pomegranates...sweet and tart in perfect harmony. I have seen some recipes here but none of the authors "rave" about the results. I am thinking about just using "Pom" juice, which I can get at our local grocery store...nothing but juice. I have a...

    Transporting Wort

The learning experience is what it is all about...and the beer. I have 12 brews under my belt (literally AND figuratively) and feel that I have just scratched the surface. Every brew has been different, mostly because I am buying new gadgets, but also because I am incorporating what I have...

Oxyclen Residue - how to remove?

Holy Frijoles! That vinegar solution worked wonders! It completely removed all the residue and I didn't even need to brush. :ban: Thanks for all the suggestions! You all rock. :rockin: BrewStef

Oxyclen Residue - how to remove?

I will try the rag on the brush...good idea. The main build-up is where the carboy curves to the neck, so a pressure washer can't reach it.

Oxyclen Residue - how to remove?

Used bleach, overnight soak - 2 oz in each fermenter (5.5 and 6.5 gal).

Oxyclen Residue - how to remove?

I had oxyclean solution sitting in a few carboys and a bottling bucket for around 2 weeks. I am having trouble rinsing out the residue in the carboys. To make it worse, it has the distinct "springtime fresh" aroma as the Oxyclean was for laundry. Doh! I was able to clean out the bottling...

    filtering, or bagging?

No no no... Whirlpool AFTER it has cooled down. Have the chiller and spoon in for the last 15 min of the boil, cool, remove chiller, use spoon to whirlpool. Hot-side aeration is BAD NEWS.

Yeast harvesting: better out of primary or secondary

Is it better to harvest the yeast from the primary or secondary or does it matter? My thinking is that it would be better to keep yeast from the secondary as the primary would have more trub. My gut also tells me that this would only be true if if the newly fermented beer was racked to the...

    Stirplates and Krausen

Thanks for all of your input. It obviously was a good starter. 12 hours after pitching I needed to affix a blowoff tube (first time I ever needed one, which was immediately followed by a major clean-up of my new chest freezer.). As always I need to RDWAHAHB rather than WANHAHB (worry and...

    Stirplates and Krausen

With a stirplate, will you get a noticable krausen or will it just keep it swirled in so that it never fully develops? The reason I ask is that I have a 1000ml WLP550 starter going for around 24 hours and no krausen has formed. Cheers. BrewStef

    Substitution recommendation needed

Thanks for the replies. Funny that you mention AHBS. I just spoke with Vance at AHBS (my first LHBS) about this issue. He does not carry these malts currently. From what I have gathered, I should stick with Crystal 120L instead of 150L (minor difference), and just use Chocolate Malt...
