    Help figuring SG

The gravity hasn't budged in 4 days. It is stuck on .030. I've swirled and warmed her up with no effect. The estimated SG and FG from Beersmith was 1.059 and 1.015 respectively. But I did not enter the Lactose and Unsweetened Cocoa into the program.

To Rack And Dry-Hop The 60 Minute IPA, Or Not

I finished a 60 min IPA. I used Ringwood Ale yeast and the son of a gun fermented for close to a month. I was on the board asking the notorious "Is it finished yet" question. I never had one go that long. I would wait a few days and then check it.

    Hop Growing in Pennsylvania

Kayaking down the Shenendoah for Smallmouth with some good beer and two guys that love good beer just brought a big smile to my face.

    Dry Hopping with Leaf Hops

I dry hopped my IPA with whole leaf hops. Before this, I have always used pellets. The leaf material has been floating on the surface for 5 days now. The pellets I have used before have always settled out on the bottom of the carboy. Should I do anything with the hops or just continue to...

    FG 1.030 too high?

I just completed an AG stout and pitched Wyeast 1084 (starter). It took off in 6 hours and in about 15 hours it was bubbling at 2 burps per second - fastest I have had to this point. It is now approaching 48 hours and things have really slowed down . I am assuming that the same thing will...

    Hop Growing in Pennsylvania

(Western PA) I really don't know anything about growing them but!! A block from where I live in the community center playground there is a 50' section of cyclone fencing that is full of hop vines and hops. I have no idea how they got there or what kind they are. I would love to find out.

    Quick Crush Question

I am crushing my grains for the first time today- new barley crusher. :) Do you need to do anything to flaked oats? Or do they go into the mash as-is? Thanks

When to crack open first bottle?

If you are just getting started, I would taste one weekly. It will teach you how a beer ages. If you keep a log, you should make notes on how the beer is developing week by week. Right now I taste one at two weeks and wait a month until drinking.

    The Source of Rookie Mistakes

I really believe that #1 (lack of learning) is the most important. Before my first brew I read Palmer, and Papazian's books and took notes. Now that I am doing All Grain, I reread Palmers's stuff on AG brewing and study the info. on the AG/Partial Forum. I am surprised at SOME of the...

    EZ Cap Bottles

Do they make 12 oz EZ Cap bottles? The smallest that I can find are 16 oz. I love the ease of the EZ cap and have a case of them. But I would love to have a case or two of 12 oz.

Yes, this grain batch was crushed by the supplier. My Barley Crusher came today.

Rivisiting Sparging a Large Grain Bill

I took everyone's advice in the post about sparging large grain bills and finished my IPA today(2nd AG batch). I used Bobby's ideas on sparging (no mashout), Salive and FlyGuy's suggestion concerning increasing my sparge volumes and Orfy's post on how to figure evaporation. I ended up with...

How long does it take you to AG?

Just finished my second AG batch and from cold water heating up to putting the airlock on the carboy was about 6 hours. I should be able to cut the time down after I get more experience and don't have to read/think everything out so much. :)

Batch Sparging a Large Grain Bill

Flyguy I see what you are saying. I don't have any extra grain and thought about adjusting the hops to account for the lower expected gravity. However the recipe calls for continuous hopping - mixing all together and adding .2 oz every 5 minutes for the 90 min boil. Continuous hopping doesn't...

    dry hopping w/pellets

I have dry hopped three times, so take my advice with a grain of "uh" hops. :) The first two times I did it I used the paint strainer bag and it worked great. The third time, I had so much hop sediment in the beer that I racked to a third carboy to clear the hops. It worked great. From there...

Batch Sparging a Large Grain Bill

Thanks guys. I am planning on brewing tomorrow. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Batch Sparging a Large Grain Bill

Bobby. So you are saying not to raise the first running temp to around 168, but instead - just collect the first running as is and then do two sparges of 2 gallons at 180? I am assuming that the two sparges at 180 will bring the grain bed temp up enough to maximize extraction.

Batch Sparging a Large Grain Bill

I screwed up the first time and did not measure the wort collected to figure the absorption rate. I will this time. I boiled for 60 min for the first batch and used 6.5 gallons and ended up with around 5.25 gallons.
