    Another batch lost to infection

I have read everything I can find on phenol flavors and infections and nothing seems to match. I highly doubt chlorine as I only use RO water and I have had many batches without a trace of phenol flavors. Maybe I discovered a new bug. Ugh

    Another batch lost to infection

    Isn’t that stuff very messy?

    Another batch lost to infection

This is so frustrating - I lost another batch to infection. It was a house ipa I have brewed a hundred times. Over a year ago I lost a few batches in a row to some infection, and this is the same infection. I have had at least 30 good batches since then. It got in everything back then and I...

    Oxygen for oxygenating wort

I gave up using the aeration stones a couple years ago after getting sick of those $10 Home Depot oxygen bottles leaking and just getting a few uses out of them, and cleaning the wand and stone. I just use the shake method now which works well enough. Wondering if there would be any benefit...

Which yeast for a Pale Ale?

I know you‘ve already brewed but the imperial house is perfect for a quick pale ale. Have done it many times in 3 weeks. Just need a starter for that quick.

    Foam, foam, foam

Just had a serious foam issue. Turned out I had a messy transfer and a lot of hop crap got in the keg. Had to pull the out poppet and a ton of crap was in it. Better now after clearing the poppet and dip tube and making a complete mess.

    Dry hopping temperature

Not to start an off-topic debate, but that’s technically diluting the O2, not purging. Maybe by the time it’s done, it’s diluted enough. But I do want to try this and want to stick with actual purging. Wonder what one minute of contact with star San will do to the hops. Need to buy a...

    Dry hopping temperature

I purge the kegs with Starsan, so I don’t understand how I can get the hops in there unless I put them in the Starsan? Maybe that works if its all done quickly.

Some questions on Lagering in keg?

I am trying to make a better Pilsner after reading another lager thread. I am usually too impatient and keg the beer after a month or so in primary fermenter and serve after another week. The last beer is usually the best. This time I would like to do a better lagering. The beer has been...

    What is your House beer?

House beer here is a clear IPA. My wife and I both love it and I have to brew my own to use clarity Ferm. 80/20 Maris/Vienna, Chico or occasional other yeast, warrior for bitter and whatever hops are on hand for flavor and dry hop. Never exactly the same but rarely disappoints. beauty of...

Does anyone else run their chilled wort through a paint straining bag before going into fermenter?

Yea I was but not long ones and the bag overflowed up my wrist and in the glove. In hind site, I should have reheated the wort to sterilize, but I didn’t. My point just being, it’s easy to get distracted and screw up. And if you are straining cooled wort, you are messing with fire. (:

Does anyone else run their chilled wort through a paint straining bag before going into fermenter?

I used to do various methods of straining the wort - bags or strainers. But then one time when I wasn’t paying a lot of attention and was messing with a strainer bag, some wort dumped across my hand into the fermenter. This turned into a major infection, and I ended up losing four entire batches...

Please tell me how to use an induction burner with BIAB

I think your pot is induction ready so that is good. I found a 5000 watt induction cooktop on Amazon that was rated for the weight and is pretty sturdy. Brand was Warmfod or Warmford which is just a rebranded Chinese OEM - like everything on Amazon. It works great, is 240v, has a wide range...

    Lager not lagery enough

Great timing for the thread, as I just produced another malty, sweet lager mess. (: I loves my dry ales, but can’t seem to get the lagers where I want them. I am definitely goin to try out many of these suggestions.

Recommendations for some sort of whirlpool/temp control for my setup

I don’t really understand your point here, but from what I understand, mashing works on a diminishing curve. If it was really done in 10 minutes, no one would mash past 15. By stirring and heating at these intervals, it allows the starches and enzymes to better react, and it allows the...

Recommendations for some sort of whirlpool/temp control for my setup

I do BIAB in a bag. I messed around with adding a recirculating solar pump and tubing and a heater on temp control. Basically it did not do a great job and was just one other thing to set up and clean. As much as I would love to set it and forget it, it just makes more sense for me to stir it...

    Baby toy contamination

If you have room, get it in the fridge - in the keg or fermenter. Let it lager there. It won’t stop an infection but may keep it under control.

New England IPA "Northeast" style IPA

I wouldn’t use that 2020 crop from YVH in the boil. 90% certain that is what turned 2 batches of mine into bitter phenol messes. Not 100% sure, but ymmv.

How 2 check FG without adding Oxygen?

100% agree. I rarely do a final gravity reading at all. Maybe when I keg it. Give it enough time and don’t rush it. Taste it when you do the final transfer to keg or bottle. As long as I see a good start to ferment I don’t worry.

    Motorized Mill on Amazon

It looks like a 2 roller setup. After using a 3 roller setup, I will never go back to 2! I was looking hard for a motorized mill and gave up, but honestly with my new monster mill mm3 and my 20v Dewalt drill, it’s so fast as efficient, I don’t need it.
