    Stasis glycol chiller

Hi everyone - This is probably a shot in the dark but if you have a Stasis glycol chiller gathering dust, I’d love to buy it! I’ll pay shipping and a fair price. Let me know if you have one and we can work something out! Thanks, Josh

    Pliny the Elder

I know this isn’t helpful to the OP’s inquiry but a few years ago my parents went on a wine tour of the Russian River valley. I had asked them to pick up a couple of bottles of Pliny if they saw it (we live in Massachusetts). They went to a local liquor store a few miles from the brewery. In...

    CO2 gone in no time.

Are you talking about the o-ring that’s built into the regulator side? My tap-rite has those but I still use the nylon washer in addition to it. When I was first kegging I lost a whole tank pretty quickly. When I brought it to my welding supply shop to get it filled the guy immediately...

    Milwaukee MA871

I used to have one. To me the biggest issue was making sure to draw a “representative” sample since it relies on such little liquid. If I didn’t adequately mix up the wort it would give different readings all the time especially where the pipette wouldn’t reach too far down into the wort. The...

    Dry Hopping Cold

Thanks everyone for the input. Its so frustrating implementing all of these techniques (usually adding more and longer hopping, either post-boil or dry) and finding they don't really add anything substantive benefit. Its also expensive! My "solution" to subpar results would be to add even...

    Dry Hopping Cold

I feel like my NEIPAs haven’t had the proper hop aroma and taste for going on a few years now. I’m intrigued by Janish’s article but I was wondering how to implement the “cold/short” dry hop method. At first blush I would think I would add the hops directly to the keg (I have the clear draught...

    Massachusetts FREE (pickup only) - 22 ounce bottles/swing-top bottles/jockey box/Johnson temp controller

Hi everyone - I hope you all are safe and healthy. I've held onto these items for a while with good intentions, but its clear I'm either not going to need them or that its been so long that I don't need them. So I am giving them away to someone who will use them. Due to...

    Belgian waffle maker suggestions

I went on a crazed belgian waffle maker hunt a few years ago. The one recommended by Cooks Illustrated at the time wasn't deep enough. We don't have the space for one of those spinning ones. I even tried a stovetop one and it stunk. I ended up getting this one, the Presto FlipSide, which...

    Grain bills crushed to order

I’ve ordered milled grains from them twice before and they’ve both been fine. If I’m remembering correctly you can separate the grains by specific bills. Nothing I’ve needed to do but was a neat feature. I BIAB and got the regular crush (I believe they’ll double-crush for a $1-2 more). My...

    Transfer to primary,

As for the volume, that’s totally fine! In fact higher up and you’d run the risk of a blow off because there would be much less head space for the krausen in my opinion. As for when it’ll be ready, the yeast will tell you (through both a hydrometer reading and when they flocculate and drop out).

Oily sheen on fresh wort surface

Yeah if I were to guess (and I am!), it’s the oils from the hips. That’s a good thing!

What’s the smallest kettle I can use?

Actually putting the kettle in the snow is a lousy way to chill the wort. I discovered that my very first brew! I put the kettle right into a snowball and it took close to 4 hours to cool down. Instead of chilling it, the snow became an insulator. I’ve been out there in 10 degree weather...

What’s the smallest kettle I can use?

I brew 5 gallon batches and do full volume BIAB mashes in the middle of NE (are you talking about New England or Nebraska?) winters. I have a 10 gallon kettle and use a propane burner. I would love to use an induction burner but I would need the Avantco that IslandLizard references above. I...

    Starter yeast

In addition to what AJinJacksonville wrote above I’d usually make a “vitality” starter i.e. I would overbuild it by 0.5 liters and save that for future use. I would do it with dry yeast mainly to save costs. Gram for gram the most expensive ingredient by far in brewing beer is yeast. The...

    Gloves when Brewing

I use these: Heavy Duty PVC Coated Work Gloves, Liquid/Chemical Resistant, Cotton Lining, Large (Wells Lamont 174L) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0025ZIT8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_-skkFbYRV8SGA They’re non-slip even when wet, have some good heat resistance, and I can use them for cleaning too.

Vermont & Boston Trip This Weekend

It looks like Trillium’s locations at Fort Point and the Fenway are open for on-site consumption but you need to make reservations. The beer garden on the Greenway is closed though. Treehouse is only open for contactless pickup. I couldn’t find if Alchemist is open for on-site consumption but...

    Bottling from a keg?

If you're talking short-term portability (i.e. going to a party or dropping some beer off to buddies, etc.), I use growlers. Bottling from the keg is fine as everyone mentions above, but I would only do it if I was thinking about long-term storage. And the few times I've done it, I bottle 22...

Massachusetts Newbie from Bedford, MA Checking In

Hi! I'm in the next town over (Lexington!). If you're looking for beers, Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont is good stuff and due to Covid-19 they can deliver! Also Mighty Squirrel brewery moved into the area (Waltham) relatively recently. Their stuff is pretty heavy on the "NE" part of NEIPAs but...

    Greetings from Lithuania

Welcome! I'm half-Lithuanian (my dad's side - my grandfather came from Kaunas, my grandmother from Vilnius). I've tried to find Lithuanian beers in the US but have struck out all over the place. I also visited Vilnius and Kaunas in 2000. Vilnius was one of the prettiest cities I've ever been in.
