    first 5 gallon batch

I've been brewing with a Mr. Beer for a couple years now but it always felt like I never had enough beer. I have upgraded to a 5 gallon setup for now and am still using extract recipes. Saturday I made a batch of wheat beer. http://www.steelnthings.com/beer/P1011237.JPG...

No worries, I'll drink them before that happens.

    Bottle Codes?

Are there codes on glass bottles that sort of explain how much pressure they are rated for? I have some small Sanpellegrino bottles that are pretty small and look fun to use/give away. I dunno why, I can't explain it. Anyway, is there a Da Vinci code for glass bottles?

Bottle label removal - just an experience

EDIT: I used Powdered Line Cleaner (PLC) not Powdered Brewery Cleaner. Maybe they are the same, but I wanted to clarify.

Bottle label removal - just an experience

I have not been able to bring myself to buy empty beer bottles at the LBS. So slowly I have been collecting bottles from Deschutes and Widmer and the like. Recently I was given about 3 cases that a buddy had saved up for me. My first attempt at removing the labels was soaking the bottles...

    Airlock question

Pretty sure I wasn't asking if it was a good gauge or not. I just wanted more information on the types of airlocks and the fluid contained within. But thanks for the pointed and generally annoyed tone of information anyway. I posted this in the beginners section not because I'm totally green...

    Airlock question

What air locks are you guys having success with? What do you use for the fluid? I've read that water is fine, but a lot of folks I know use vodka also. I'd rather not use vodka because of the smell (you guessed it, I had a bad experience with it once). Is water ok to use?

Developing a beer for a BBQ sauce

Has anyone developed a beer just for BBQ sauce and cooking? I've tried to make a few sauces with my beer that I like and none of them have turned out.

Extract brewing without steeping grains or partial mash

Put the kids to work? :D Seriously, my kids do help when I make beer, they learn something new every time and we get to hang out too. Mine are 8 and 10 though.

    What if......dumb idea

phosphoric acid.....check You could carbonate it again if it fermented. I might try it, it'd cost a dollar right? At least it might be cheap entertainment.

    What if......dumb idea

We were having one of those deep office conversations and some how we got to talking about fermentation and how yeast eats sugar to make alcohol.....blah blah blah, fun stuff right? :rockin: But then someone asked if anyone had made beer (loosely termed) from pepsi (or coke or Royal Crown...

    Newbie from SW Washington

Welcome from Spokane! A little tip: after reading here for information I became over whelmed with the information and the technical aspects that make consistent beer. Don't get caught up in that just yet. Make some simple fun batches first, learn the basics. No need to freak out. Extract...

    Hot Box idea

Nice box from Hoquiam, my folks live north of you in Forks. you should be able to pick up a digital thermostat online for about $15.

    Hot Box idea

That is a pretty small space. You will not need much wattage if the box is insulated well. You might pickup 20' of heat cable (~5W/foot) which would be about 100W. You could weave the cable around the box and have great distribution...

    Hot Box idea

I have my fermentation room in the basement with a very small forced air heater and line voltage thermostat. We keep our home at 65*F during the day, 62*F at night and 50* when not at home. My room isn't usable for much besides storage and measures 6'H x 6'W x 10'L. It used to be the coal...
