    Don't Fear the Foam??

+1 on shaking. When cleaning my primary I'll add water, then starsan, and shake for 1 min. Within 5 seconds of shaking the bucket is full of foam.

    First Batch

That was my first beer - delicious, was a hit with all my friends/family. Will be making it again

    Heavy Hop smell

If your looking for a very heavy hop aroma, can you use high AA hops like Columbus/Warrior/Chinook? Most recipes seem to use those as the full 60 min boil hops and then tone down to lighter hops. Will be cooking with heavy AA hops. Thanks guys, this question is for my brother who is not...

    First Brew (with video)

Great job, looks like things went well. You had a good grasp on what you were doing for your first batch, kudos. It always makes it more fun with a brew buddy. Welcome to the fun hobby of brewing !!

    1.03 sg?

took a hydrometer reading, and as you guys have guessed, it did go up. I'm reading a 1.045 reading after one day of fermenting. Much happier. Thanks guys. Here I try to go all technical by taking a reading, and it screwed me up...lol. Thanks and once again, you were right !!!

    1.03 sg?

Seems way too low. Extract kit, pretty hard to mess up. Only thing I can think of is I couldn't find my thief so I held the corner of the "test tube" and submerged it enough to fill it up. (It was sanitized). As I took the sample the wort was sitting on 1/3 a bucket full of foam (star-san)...

    Cleaning question (PBW)

I've never used PBW, but on my last purchase I bought some. I normally just use an unscented detergent when cleaning my equipment and rinse well. Do you use PBW/Oxyclean every time you clean? I clean my fermenting bucket very well (with same detergent) right after i transfer to bottling...

thumbs up to austin homewbrew supply

9 days shipping for me, but when received package, everything looks nicely packaged, and in really good shape. Going to brew theirs on Friday, rather than a another one I bought at my LHBS. . First time using AHB.

First ever brew - day before prep

You are going to have fun. Having a brew buddy makes it even more fun. The first one may seem a little stressful, but nothing really happens all that fast. Just remember to get everything clean, and then sanitized. Keep putting your stuff back in the sanitized solution as you use it. Don't...

Looking for VERY hoppy Brown Ale

My Brother loves hoppy beer. He really loves strong IPA's and is getting back into home brewing. He has little interest in doing AG at this point, so please stick to extract + steeping grains + extra hops. My taste likes hops that balance the flavor, but he likes the amount of hops that...

    I've actually got smoke

All of my friends home brews I've ever tried never have had any smoke. On my latest brew (Midwest Autumn Amber ale) I get that traditional carbonated "pop", and a really good amount of smoke, and really nice lacing.

Got the rest of my equipment today...........brewing Thursday or Friday.

looks like a great setup you have there !! Everything except priming sugar (might come with kits). Depending what the cleanser is, you might want to go with something like PBW. There is always more to get as I'm finding out: wort chillers/plate chiller, kegging equipment. I like your SS...

How different are various amber ales?

    Rookie temperature question

is it on the floor? I know my basement floor is freezing cold, and would chill the beer. Is 57-58 the temp from your bucket sticker or a thermometer (air temp)?

    New Turkey Fryers

I don't think you really need to wait 4 weeks in primary. I've read on here that too long in the primary can cause off flavors for some beers/styles. This is from Midwests instructions for the Irish Red: "After 5-7 days of fermentation, transfer into a glass carboy. If you are using a single...

    Question about hop bitterness.

I agree bud/coors/miller no hop aroma, slight bittering to balance. I just looked around the forums, and it doesn't look like this is an easy beer to make, any mistakes seem to be more pronounced due to it being such a light tasting beer.

    tasted first beer!?

what did you guys sanitize with? Did you boil the steeping grains?
