What's the difference between kits method and full boil?

Taking bmckee56's question a little further... If doing a full or near full boil when also doing late additions in a kit that says boil 2 gallons, has anyone brewed a beer that seemed too hoppy for the recipe or the style? I've only done this once and it was with a Kolsch, but the first Kolsch...

    Future kegerator?

I got the 5.3 CF Holiday chest freezer from Lowe's. Brand new, and it did the same thing. Replacement was fine. I think you are SOL, sorry.

Need advice in preparation for first competition

I'm albout as experienced as you but would like to throw my 2 cents in. I have a Kolsch in the kegerator right now. I don't filter, and I have noticed the last 1/3 of the keg (the top 1/3) has much more clarity. I'm not very good at waiting a long time to start drinking though....

    My first real lager

    Thanks Yooper!

    My first real lager

I'm brewing the Oktoberfest lager kit from Midwest w/ Octoberfest yeast from Wyeast. The directions say to lager @ 35-45 in secondary after 7-10 days ferm. & diacetyl rest. Can I just rack to a keg after the diacetyl rest and throw it in the kegerator @ 40 degrees? I would purge and...

    A bit of a mess

Which yeast did you brew with? I brewed a hefe with the Weihenstephan strain from Wyeast and the krausen was crazy. They warn about it on the website not the package.

    They're alive!

My shipment from Midwest Supplies came a day earlier than expected and no one was home. After almost 5 hours on the porch my Wyeast activators were still liquid. After smacking my Oktoberfest lager it puffed up fast. Good thing some warm air blew in (the high was 29 F).

    Show us your Kegerator

I agree, and I think its all about marketing. I bet that back in the day there was game of one brewer's tap handle being the biggest so a competitor made theirs bigger...until we have the monsters of today.

    Refill or exchange CO2 tank?

I ran out of CO2 on New Year's Eve and was at the welding supply store 35 minutes before they closed trying to get my new aluminum tank refilled. They had shut their pumps down at 2pm so they could not refill (the usual time I did not know about). They swapped my 5lb new aluminum tank for a 10...

    glass carboy vs better bottle

I you decide to go with better bottle I strongly suggest using a milk crate to transport. The wiki mentions the possibility of sucking water out of the airlock and into the wort. In reality its an almost gauranteed result.

    carbonic acid taste lingering?

After de-gassing the beer over a week and getting it to a reasonable level I have found that the "bite" has gone. I am answering myself. The carbonic bite does not immediately disappear upon flattening, but will with time.

    carbonic acid taste lingering?

Basically I was wondering if the bite from carbonic acid goes away immediately after flattening the beer or does it linger? I agitated the beer in the glass enough to flatten it and the taste did not improve. The beer tasted fine two 2 weeks ago, but has a bite now and I'm trying to narrow...

help with direction for a newbie

to bottle from keg see this thread: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f35/we-no-need-no-stinking-beer-gun-24678/ as for keezer vs fridge it depends on what your needs/wants are even if you use a fridge I would suggest using an external thermostat I use a keezer and moving full kegs into it is not...

What is THAT taste? Learning flavors in beers. The good the bad and the UGLY!

Yeah, why the green bottles? I've had St. Paulie Girl many many times. Sometimes its less skunky then others but always a bit skunky. I think PU isn't good out of the bottle, but its ok on tap.

    Agghhhh, too much foam

I may have had a leak. The pressure relief valve on one of my kegs seems to need some help sometimes getting a seal after I vent. Maybe one time the leak was too slow for me to notice. Wouldn't be a problem if I had a balanced system. Going to buy some beer line with my next order.

Faucets. Different "nozzle" for different carbonation levels?

Loweface are sure you're not looking at hand pumps for serving cask-conditioned beer?

    Agghhhh, too much foam

I'm kind of in the same spot as Mike. Using 5' lines with perlicks in a collar though. I've had no problem with foam if I vent the kegs, but I went through a 5# tank of CO2 in 3 kegs (I force carb). Venting the kegs from 14 PSI down to 5 ish when the keg is 10% full is a HUGE waste of CO2...

Lost the nylon O-ring for the regulator

First time I took my keg setup mobile I lost my nylon o-ring. I had to get some more CO2 on New Year's Eve (great timing) Fortunately I found out that in a pinch you can carve an o-ring out of the plastic thread protector that the welding shop puts on the tank every time one is filled. The...

You Wanna Read Some Serious Anti-Beer Propaganda?

So reminds me of the truth.com commercials focusing on all the chemicals found in cigarettes, but not really making any statements about dosing or studies or any evidence whatsoever. For example, urea, the main ingredient in urine is added to cigarettes. Yeah well, its in half the moisturizing...
