Coffee in Beer, What to do? And not do?

i've done a breakfast stout that my friends rave about and i think it's my best recipe yet....the coffee flavor is definitely significant, but i love coffee. i added about 8 oz to the secondary and came out fine. i think the way to go is cold steeping or straight adding, but not brewing hot...

    Thermometer Broke - Dead Batch?

just heard back from the store...sounds like i'm ok...wheeeww...talk about alcohol abuse! :) The manufacturer doesn't recommend using any instruments above 200 F. When a liquid is at a boil (212 F), this is when a thermal shock is most likely to occur and could possibly break the glass. This...

    Thermometer Broke - Dead Batch?

so during the end of boiling i realized my floating thermometer broke at the tip and some of the pellets sunk to the bottom? it's not a mercury thermometer...is my batch now wasted cause the pellets were at the bottom during the boil? i hate to waste a batch of beer, but not worth getting...

    Adding coffee beans to secondary?

i like your theory here...is enough to get the coffee flavor though? a local hombrew shop told me i could get away with dumping .5 - 1lb f coffee grinds into the secondary and let it sit for two weeks and the grinds would settle to the bottom.

    Adding coffee beans to secondary?

i recently brewed up a breakfast stout kind of clone going with the double chocolate, oats, and stout flavor. i'm looking to add coffee beans to the secondary when i go to rack my beer to add a subtle mocha/coffee flavor. question is: how much coffee should i use if i want it subtle where...

    Raspberry Wheat (extract) recipe check

quick question about amount of raspberries...it's currently out of a season and the cheapest i found was 6oz for $3.99 - if i go with the 4lbs (which i intended) that's the price of a beer recipe alone (and then some) - could i get away with only doing 1-2lbs? or what if i switched to...

Did I Ruin my Secondary Batch/Bottles?

hey hey, with spring wetaher, it's hard to keep a constant temp in my upstairs rooms (where i was beginning to store/ferment) till i could move down to basement. so yesterday i headed down to DC (from jersey) on my day off to support my phillies. the weather at home was supposed to be 70ish...

    When/How to do a Blowoff?

haha...exactly the same. got it for a xmas present as a joke because my buddy and i said we're going to start our own brewery so we wouldn't have to work anymore. would have never gotten this far without that mrbeer kit which got the creativity going. now i'm spending more $ on bigger batches...

Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer Double Chocolate Oatmeal Snout

man this looks tasty. i'm still a noob, but i'm gonna try this with few slight modifications. like adding coffee and maybe a sprinkly of cinnamon too. why do you only boil your extract for last 15 min of boil. don't you usually steep/sparge grains for 30-45 min at 155, then add extract, bring...

    Temp Question for Yeast/Aplfewien

is was actually red star. i'll have to go back and look at the label again. just nailing down some basics (learning from experience) and moving forward. i don't know if i'm addicted to beer or the art of brewing beer :)
