Thermometer Broke - Dead Batch?

so during the end of boiling i realized my floating thermometer broke at the tip and some of the pellets sunk to the bottom? it's not a mercury thermometer...is my batch now wasted cause the pellets were at the bottom during the boil? i hate to waste a batch of beer, but not worth getting poisoned. is it poisonous?

The pieces should settle out in the trub during fermentation.

I'd make sure it's not a mercury thermometer, and then just be a little more frugal when you rack to the bottling bucket.

just heard back from the store...sounds like i'm ok...wheeeww...talk about alcohol abuse!

The manufacturer doesn't recommend using any instruments above 200 F. When a liquid is at a boil (212 F), this is when a thermal shock is most likely to occur and could possibly break the glass. This product uses alcohol, not mercury, to measure temperature. It does not contain any toxic materials.

Well, if you consider shards of glass non toxic, so be it.

Just be careful when you rack, and maybe even consider putting some cheesecloth on your racking cane to avoid any small particles of glass.

You'll be fine - I've heard of this happening multiple times!

I had the same thing happen to me before. Fortunately the nature of the weight is to sink!

I had no problems with glass, but mine just broke, it didn't shatter or anything.
