Natural Carb taking the day off

Well... just kegged the 4th batch (that I've kegged rather than bottled). Alot of promise on this one, a chipotle porter, jalepenos in the boil and a chipotle tincture at kegging.. tastes amazing pre carb. My issues so far have been with achieving appropriate carbonation. Keg 1 I force...

    Corny Gas Post Leak

Dwain, thanks for the response.. I have indeed already been through the steps you listed, as I would hope anyone would.. still no luck. Soap and water ( i use windex ) didnt reveal the source and as Ive tried multiple connectors, I have to assume the problem is due to some irregularity in the...

    Corny Gas Post Leak

It seems one of my cornys has a leak when I hook a gas line up to it, something to do with the gas post. It holds pressure just fine when not hooked up. I've tried several gas connectors, all had the same problem with this post. Ive also keg lubed the o-ring and pop it seal (a little). Any...

    Scaling Recipes..

Yeah, the math on the base ingredients makes perfect sense, as does using the entire yeast starter... its more the ingredients such as yeast nutrient and energizer that I've not used before (... in brewing beer) and am a bit unfamiliar with that I'm curious about. The Complete Meadmaker book...

    Scaling Recipes..

Quick question on scaling mead recipes.. do the ingredients more or less scale linearly, say if for instance I wanted to do 3 gallon batches instead of 5 gallon? how does this effect additions of yeast nutrient, or yeast energizer? or pectinase in a recipes that call for it? Cheers. - Zack

    Beer backflow into regulator..

Well... in my bone headed move of the week I disassembled my kegerator beer and gas lines (which Ive done a thousand times) to take them to a party, and then proceeded to switch the lines when hooking them up at the party. Short story short, I believe I have run beer back into my regulator. It...

    Possible Regulator Leak

There is a washer embedded in the regulator flange where it would contact the CO2 valve, but not then a separate one that would cover the entirety of the contact surface. I've read about the weep hole... but I get the impression that would be more on the body of the regulator. In regard to...

    Possible Regulator Leak

I believe I have a hole in the stem of my regulator unit at the flange where it connects to the CO2 tank. I have always had problems with it leaking gas there, but have always managed to get it to seat so that it was not leaking, until now. This is the first time I've actually looked and noticed...

    Frustration

Again, thanks to everyone for the kind advice. The first batch was bottled 9/17/08, and the most recent was bottled 1/6/09. There are still bottles left of each so they've had some time to hang out. They're stored upright on shelves in a closet on the main floor, not far from the...

    Frustration

Thank you everyone for the responses. Well, honestly i don't think its my technique... I'm the kind of anal retentive detail oriented person who likes to read everything they can and understand why they are doing each step theyre doing before even making an attempt... well.... except for...

    Frustration

Well.... after 5 batches and several years of reading everything I could get my hands on, I'm about ready to hang it up for the time being. 5 batches, all different varieties (kits from midwest)... all taste more or less exactly the same... a bit under attenuated, and a good bit estery...

    Esters overpowering (going bananas)

yup. that was my 2nd batch ever, and the last that was sans aeration (beyond dumping into the fermentor from height), and the last that was done without a yeast starter. sounds like the triple team effect. thank you for the replies... i knew that was the likely possibility, just was in...

    Esters overpowering (going bananas)

Brewed an amarillo pale ale back on September 19, and opened the first bottle a few days ago. The ester flavor (banana) is overpowering the hop flavor big time. I used Wyeast 1332 Northwest Ale, and a total of 1/2 oz columbus, and 2 total oz Amarillo (its the kit from midwest supplies). It...

    Sanitizing Citrus Zest for 2ndary

Searched around a while and heard mention of 3 methods for getting zest ready to add to secondary, but none of them seem to be specific. Any thoughts would be appreciated. 1 - soak it in a bit of vodka. but for how long, in how much vodka, and do you add the vodka to the 2ndary with the...

    Yeast Starter.. Infected or Bueno?

Hi all. Made my first yeast starter two nights ago. It will be for my 5th extract batch to brew, which I had originally planned to brew tonight. Im wondering if my starter looks as though its showing signs of infection. Its got white circular spots forming on the surface which look an awful...
