    What's in your fermenter(s)?

Black IPA, basically adjusting a Wookie Jack clone to my preferences. OG 1.084 This was my first trial with some new equipment and trying out a manual HERMS set up. The brew day was rough. I couldn't get my new Captain Crush grain mill to work right for awhile. It just kept spinning only one...

How long before you made your first real good beer?

My first batch was an extract recipe for a double IPA I built from looking at recipes here, but I really didn't like it. It was way darker than I expected (because I added the DME at the beginning of the boil I suspect) and was not very hoppy. Other people liked it though. After that first...

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps?

It looked like no activity for around 12 hours and then it went crazy. Glad I put a blow-off tube!

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps?

Thanks guys I ended up pitching it when it hit 70F. It's bubbling away now and hit temp just fine early this morning.

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps?

Yeah wlp007 says 65 to 70 as the normal range so I'm going to wait until it hits that. It's at 74f now so I figure I can wait.

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps?

With me having to disconnect the pump from the plate chiller, I'm just paranoid that some undesriable bugs got in (though I don't really see how they could have) and me pitching the yeast starter would overpower it if there was a bug. I know that's a silly thing but it would put my mind at ease

Can I pitch yeast at higher temps?

Hi all, I made a black IPA today with a bunch of new equipment, and the brew day went alright I guess. I tried with basically a manual HERMS system on propane and I had a bit of trouble maintaining temos but that wasn't too bad. The big problem was that it was freezing outside and I got my new...

    How Long a Starter Lasts

The beer is supposed to be a high gravity black ipa, with an OG of 1.084. I made a 1.5L starter with about 5oz of light DME for 48 hours on a stir plate. I think that gives me around 315 billion cells according to Beersmith. Beersmith also states that I need around 300 billion for the batch, so...

    How Long a Starter Lasts

Great, thanks for the reassurance, guys. I will probably just make a quick starter tonight then. I figure giving the yeast a quick wake up might be a good idea.

    How Long a Starter Lasts

Hi all, In preparation for a batch, I made a starter on December 26th, and then due to a family emergency, I was unable to make the batch. I had the starter on a stir plate until the 28th, when my fiancee put it in the refrigerator. It's been there since then. Would the starter still be viable...

    Use for extra pump?

That's true maybe I could just like them up.

    Use for extra pump?

I have been given an extra match pump. I have two already mounted to my brew table. Is there anything I could use the next pump for? Maybe pumping from the carboy to my kegs?

This a decent idea for a RIMS type system?

But I'm a beginner, especially when it comes to HERMS haha:mug:

This a decent idea for a RIMS type system?

Oops yeah HERMS sorry, it's been awhile. Is there a way to edit the title? Thanks, I will check it out. And yeah that was my concern about maintaining temps with propane.

This a decent idea for a RIMS type system?

So I got a pump and a plate chiller for christmas and I wanted to try keeping my immersion chiller to use for a HERMS type system. I only have one kettle, I use a propane burner, and I have a large cooler for the mash tun. If I do what's in the image, I could recirculate my mash and maintain...

This a decent idea for a RIMS type system?

Edit: Oops I meant HERMS, not RIMS. Is there any way to edit the title? So I got a pump and a plate chiller for christmas and I wanted to try keeping my immersion chiller to use for a HERMS type system. I only have one kettle, I use a propane burner, and I have a large cooler for the mash...

My first try at a original black ipa

Nice, I recently just finished my first shot at a Black IPA. How do you like the Midnight wheat? I went with only carafa III but I think next time I will try midnight wheat as well and cut back on the carafa. I hit my numbers for OG (1.082) but it finished 3 points higher than I had intended...

Value in raising temperature after primary?

Thanks guys! I will raise the temp a few degrees while dry hopping

    carbonation issues

1.040 FG sounds scary and tooth meltingly sweet. Beyond the issues of aerating after yeast addition, directly pitching dry yeast, the FG, and capping issues, how do you add the priming sugar? Maybe you said it and I missed it. If you're just adding the dry sugar to the bottling bucket before or...
