    Batch Size

To answer your first question, yes. You need to add 1/4 gal to account for the loss in the kettle. If you want to bottle 5 gal then plan to get 5.5 gal in the fermenter. You will lose .5 gal due to trub loss.

British Brown Ale Fat Squirrel clone

Good to know Yooper. Cheers. I'll report back with the results in about 6 weeks weeks. :)

British Brown Ale Fat Squirrel clone

Brewed 11 gal yesterday. Over shot my OG by 5 points (1.056). Split the batch using Nottingham and S04. I'm a rookie brewer so I wanted to take this opportunity to see the difference in the two yeasts.

    Water Question

I will also add that Beersmith's calculations are getting me to add the following to 6.51 gal of water: 1.8 g of epsom salt 5.5 g calcium chloride .9 g baking soda 1.5 g chalk

    Water Question

I have been all grain brewing all summer ( 8 batches) with successful results and I want to take it to the next step. The next step is water chemistry. To this point, the only thing I have been doing on brew day is running my water through a carbon filter, getting rid of any chlorine. I have...

British Brown Ale Fat Squirrel clone

Thanks to the OP for the recipe! Cheers. I'm going to brew an 11 gal batch this weekend, splitting into 2 fermenters with different yeasts. My yeast type will be based on what my LBS has in stock. I'll update once I know what I'm using.

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

I brewed this up today. For the most part everything went great. Missed my OG by a few points and got 1.067. Ended up getting 81% eff and was looking for 78%. Used 1lb of rice hulls and no issues with my sparge. Can't wait to taste this in a few months! Thanks again for the recipe!

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

Thoughts on adding 1/2 lb of Carapils to this recipe to give better head retention and body?

    Autumn Seasonal Beer Punkin' Ale

I think I'm going to brew this recipe up this weekend. I plugged the ingredients into Brewsmith and based on my equipment profile and efficiency I came up with this. I would like to fly sparge if possible. Thoughts? Recipe Specifications -------------------------- Boil Size: 7.77 gal Post Boil...

    In de Vrede - Westvleteren

I visited the abbey in May of this year. In de Vrede is across the street from the abbey and is a great place to sit back and enjoy their great beers at an awesome price! You can purchase sampler packs in the gift shop. The sample packs consist of 4 beers (two blondes, one 8 and one 12) and a...

5 Gallon Carboy vs 6 Gallon

I use 6 gal. This allows me to put 5.5 gal in and 5 gal to bottles.

British Brown Ale Nut Brown AG

I'm brewing this up tomorrow. I'm subbing the pale malt for Belgian pilsner malt because I have 30lbs that I need to use up. I'm also adding 1.5oz of roasted barley to dry it up a tad. I'm really looking forward to this one based on all the reviews. Thanks Sparky!

    Is star-san still good ?

At $.75/ounce I make a new 5 gal solution at every brew. It's so cheap. Most of the 5 gal solution gets used in my blow off bucket for the first week ferment.

Centennial IPA Critique, If You're So Inclined

You need to open the "preview pane" in Beersmith, then select the "plain txt" option. From there you can cut and paste the recipe. The preview pane can be found by highlighting the recipe and then selecting the preview icon on the right.

    Slow Fermentation Advise Needed

I thought I would give an update to where I'm at with this beer. It's been a long, slow fermentation as expected with such a high gravity beer. It's been about 5 weeks and every reading had shown a drop so I just left it ferment at 72F. My last reading only dropped 1 point so I decided to rouse...

    Franziskaner Hefe-weisse Clone

I finally got around to brewing this up yesterday. I came up short by 4 points on my OG. I ended up with 1.048 so my abv might be a tad lower in the end. I'm really looking forward to tasting this in a few weeks.

    Sight glass overflow

I had this same problem. I now place a small (6" x 6") piece of flashing beneath the keggle to protect the valve, site glass and thermometer. For $1.50 at Home Depot it works like a charm.
