    Hops and Yeast for NEIPA

Thanks for the input everyone. I've got a brew or two coming up before this one, but that'll give me some time to think things through.

    Hops and Yeast for NEIPA

Thanks for the input. Haven't used S-04 in a while, and am just waiting on a blonde ale with it to finish up. Maybe I'll see how that turns out and decide from there. But, don't you want a fairly neutral yeast for a NEIPA? Unless Conan/yeasts geared towards them produce some flavors which...

    Hops and Yeast for NEIPA

Against my better judgement, I ordered a NEIPA while out over the weekend. I generally don't like them all too much, but this one was quite good (Fort Orange). Wasn't murky at all, hazy but a nice bright yellow color, slight bitterness at the back end. Definitely something I could appreciate...

    What are you drinking now?

@Dgallo Thanks! I haven't joined one yet. Know of one in Scotia. You know of any good ones around?

    What are you drinking now?

HB cascade pale ale. Pretty close to Sierra Nevada, which was the goal. Added bonus, finally nice for a day in upstate NY. Cheers, everyone.

    First time kegging

According to this, it takes about 3.5 oz to carb a 5 gallon keg, and ~2 to serve. But with only 20oz, you'll want to make sure there aren't any gas leaks in your connections. Can lose a 20lb tank I'm a few days with a leak. 20oz, jeez, could be a few hours, then you're left with nothing to...

What I did for beer today

Made a keg line cleaner. And checked gravity of blonde ale. Not done yet.

    Follow CO2 cylinder weight

I've sat my CO2 tank on it to monitor the weight of it. Seems to work well. Think that's what this is made for, constant monitoring. You'll lose a few oz to carb, and the same for serving. But you should see a steady decline of you have a leak.

    Follow CO2 cylinder weight

I ran into the same problem a half a year ago. Lost a 20 pounder on one keg. I ended up buying one of those continuous read-out scales. And also keg lube. Ever since the keg lube, the CO2 take behaves. But good to know if there's a leak with the scale. Check the link below for the scale...

More foam on second pour from keg

I've noticed that the first pour of the day from the keg has a what I will call a normal amount of head/foam (one finger or so). The second pour has much more, 3 fingers. I notice it every time and it's starting to get a bit annoying. Anyone notice this as well? Any advice? The beer is on...

    Mash water acidification

I kinda figured it was because of the 100% distilled water. Good to confirm! I ordered a water chemistry book to read up on it, mainly out of curiosity. I tend to just trust Bru'n water, hasn't seemed to fail me yet (except the circular references, which I just caught!)

    Mash water acidification

I've read online that people usually need to acidify their mash, especially for lighter beers. However, every time I punch in my salt additions into Bru'n Water, my mash pH is either pretty close to where it should be or actually is a bit too low. In order to get to the right pH, I actually...

Figuring out the procedure for my first all-grain brew. (BIAB)

Not sure if anyone mentioned it, but if you're pre-boil is 6.5 gallons and your kettle is 8.5 gals, you're going to have one heck of a time to make sure that thing isn't going to boil over. I use a 10gal kettle and my hot break is pushing the edge most of the time. Just keep that in mind when...

90min vs 60 min boil - from a practicality standpoint

Just put in what you plan on doing. For boil time, the program/s will calculate total water boiled off based on boil length and boiloff rate. Mash time, not sure if BeerSmith does anything with that, but BrewCipher accounts for wort fermentability using mash time. I guess just one thing is to...

90min vs 60 min boil - from a practicality standpoint

Interesting, nearly cutting everything in half. Is there any discernable difference between this a 60/60 mash/boil? I tried something like this with one gallon but it was a s-show before I knew what I was doing.

90min vs 60 min boil - from a practicality standpoint

Yeah, I saw it on their site as well as a different clone on BYO. I just finished making one more or less like on SN's site. Should be good.

90min vs 60 min boil - from a practicality standpoint

That's true. That one didn't cross my mind. Though, you think that would benefit a hop-forward beer or would the hops overshadow any additional malty/rich flavor you get from the longer boil? Could help round out the flavor, but I don't have experience comparing the boil lengths. I can...
