    A Brit in Japan

Check out Shochu. Which is more popular as a daily drink for many (most?) Japanese men. And the Japanese brands of whisky can compare to what the rest of the world can offer.

    A Brit in Japan

I know you can homebrew in Japan. I assume you can make mead and wine in Japan as well. I do not know anything about getting fresh ingredients for mead and wine in Japan. If you want good beer, look for Baird's beer. Brewed in Japan by people know and love beet.

    Shorted heating element?

That connection Hot to Gnd is what the GFCI is looking for. When it sees current going to ground, it assumes it is going to ground through you. And it shuts down the circuit. It is amazing to me how sensitive GFCI breaker are. And that is a good thing, it does not take much current to do you hatm.

    Water temp?

How hard is it to raise the temperature on your rig? One option: Take your mash temp, add a 3-4 degrees, get your strike water to that temp. Then add your grains, stir. Wait for things to settle down a few minutes, then add heat to reach the desired mash temp. Measurement over calculations.

    Yeast sachet in boiling water

We tend to think if yeast as this delicate, fragile little organism. When I think about, yeast has been around since about forever. Yeast has got to be pretty hearty to survive in the wild. Maybe this is an example of yeast being tougher than we give it credit.

What was your Gatewaybeer to craft beer?

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was the first beer that stood out and made me think, "Wow. This is something new, different and tasty."

What is a good setup for distilling water and brewing $200 or less?

Clarification. I get distilling water. What does "and brewing" mean? Distilling beer to make whiskey? Distilling water to make beer? Use the still as hot liquor tank Use the still as a mash tun? Use the still as a boil kettle? I get RO orvde-ionized water for $0.35 per gallon for my brewing. I...

Flour beetles during mash -- Continue or discard?

IIRC. That thread turned out to be a hoax. It took a while to be exposed. But still awesome.

Is this a reference to this legendary thread? 17 years ago from yesterday. http://www.brewboard.com/index.php?showtopic=22999

Brewery Design / Ventilation Advice Needed

Good points. And to be fair to the condenser positive crowd, I have never I brewed using the condenser technique. I have been lucky to brew in garages in California. I have never brewed in doors with a ventilation system. I do not know how heroic a system has to be to be accecptable.

If you is peeking, you ain't mashing.

Brewery Design / Ventilation Advice Needed

I am not a fan of work arounds and temp set up situations What would it take to get your brewing exhaust water to go directly into the sump pump? Seems to me a run of 2" PVC pipe could set you up with a one time set and forget. If you sell the house, remove the PVC and you are good. I would...

    Cleaning SS Anvil Brew Bucket

You can try Craft Meister Alkaline Brewery Wash. Some users find it superior to PBW. I know that that it does work well. More beer sells a 2 oz packet for $2.50. Five Star has a product specifically made for removing beer stone and scale. If you Starsan on hand already, try that as mentioned...

How long is too long for primary fermentation?

2 weeks in the primary + 2 weeks in the bottle carbing up + 4 weeks waiting for you to drink. or . . . . 4 weeks in the primary + 2 weeks in the bottle carbing up + 2 weeks to drink. Pretty much the same thing, IMHO.

    Thermal probe connection issues

The connector you are is an XLR connector. They are a tried and true and hardy connection system. Virtually every professional microphone connection is an XLR After 50-60 years, they are still popular for line level audio. Their weakness is the solder connection requires A good strain relief...

    mobile home brewing

If you are not getting your brewing equipment, that sounds spiteful and nasty to me. A pot, a bag, a spoon and a stove is all you need to make beer. Eta, you will need a reliable thermometer. Check restaurant supply stores. I might be opening a can of worms, but aluminum is more budget...

    Bulk Honey

What is rapeseed/canola honey like? What kind of flavor profile? I am going to guess that it is pretty light and neutral.

    Chistmas Ale recipe comments/suggestions/advice

I am with you, experimenting is half the fun of homebrewing. Brew the beer you want and see how it comes out. If you based it on a recipe you have faith in, brew it.

    Chistmas Ale recipe comments/suggestions/advice

If it were my recipe I would not be so busy with all those spices nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, vanilla, two orange peels. Maybe you will get a fine and wonderful balance. I would be worried all those spices fight each other and you end up with spice mud. Vanilla is delicate and easy to over...
