So what do you most miss/DON'T miss about your beginning brewing experiences?

I really can't think of anything I miss about my early brewing days. It was harder, took more time, and the beer wasn't as good. And 9 years into it, I'm still learning stuff (though the lessons are less essential), so I wouldn't say it's become boring or predictable. Although...I don't get...

Leave hops in freezer for 5 weeks? Bad idea?

I've stored in the freezer in ziplock bags for at least that long without issues. The bigger question is how are you going to get around the non-essential travel restrictions in order to travel from Canada to the US?

Make your own beer, they said. You'll save money, they said.

Not saying I subscribe to the homebrew/beer/boat/fish analogy, just surprised it hadn't come up yet. Speaking for myself, I have a dead-simple BIAB setup that paid for itself ages ago and I buy ingredients in bulk, so I definitely save money brewing (though that was never the intention).

2 pages of comments on "homebrewing to save money" thread and no one has rolled out this old chestnut yet? "Homebrewing to save money on beer is like buying a boat to save money on fish." <shakes head>

    Genesis Fermenters

You're right. "Standard shipping rates apply". I hadn't noticed that.

    Genesis Fermenters

Although maybe the sale price is a ploy to get suckers like me to spend another $40 on caps, airlocks, etc in order to get free shipping. 🤔

    Genesis Fermenters

Big Mouth Bubbler is what I currently use for primary. I also have a Better Bottle knockoff if my brewing schedule gets really ambitious, but they're a pain in the ass to clean. Still use glass for any lengthy secondary. The Genesis attracted me for the wide mouth and ridiculous price point.

    Genesis Fermenters

Ha. I didn't know that about Austin Homebrew/Adventures in Homebrewing. Back in the day, Austin Homebrew was my LBHS. Yeah, the liners seem like an unnecessary complication.

    Genesis Fermenters

Has anyone used these? Care to comment on your findings? I'm curious to know if these are any good and why at least two online retailers are currently selling these at an extreme discount. https://www.austinhomebrew.com/Genesis-Fermenter-65-Gallon_p_6172.html...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

How do you get the inside of your kettle so shiny?

If I decide not to dry hop

Looks like you're pretty well covered. The only thing I'd add is that there can be issues with dry hopping for too long. I've left a batch on hops for too long (in excess of 3 weeks) and had to contend with bitter, grassy flavors.

    Plague Pale Ale

Hey everybody. Just following up. This has been in bottles about 2 weeks and I started trying it. Results are about what I expected, definitely fine and drinkable, but not something I'd rush to share with friends and neighbors. 2 things of note: 1. There's more hop flavor than I would've...

    I. MADE. BEER.

The best way I can think of describe green tasting beer is... Y'know, that taste when it's only been in the bottle for a week or less, that seems to go away somewhere between the 1-2 week mark?

    Plague Pale Ale

Slurry is from a batch that's been (and still is) in primary for a week and a day. My plan was to transfer that to secondary, dry hop, then split the cake between 2 fermentors. Sounds like you think that's a decent plan? If memory serves (and this hasn't happened in many years), when I've had...

    Plague Pale Ale

Looking for one last opinion on this...originally I was going to split a WLP007 yeast cake from my previous batch into 2 fermentors for this one. However, I'm concerned about the slim chance of autolysis (it's a thing! I've had it!) ruining contents of both fermentors. Thinking of dumping half...

    Plague Pale Ale

All right, guys, I made this today... I found some extra-light DME and decided on an 80 min boil, so the final recipe ended up being... 14# M.O. 2# XL DME 0.5 oz Magnum 80m 0.5 oz Citra 80m 3.5 oz Citra 5m Mashed at 157-158º Post-boil volume was 11ish gal. Thanks everybody for the suggestions.

    Plague Pale Ale

I could do a dunk sparge. I've never done any kind of sparge, mostly because I like to keep it simple, but I could give it a shot. This adjunct thing interests me...how/why does that work?
  18. E

    Plague Pale Ale

That's a good point. But having an extra gallon or two of beer to drink is pretty magical.

    Plague Pale Ale

I might have to take some Citra out of the DH then and add to the bittering addition. I'm trying to stretch the ingredients I have on hand to 10 gallons, and 0.5 oz of Magnum and 4 oz of Citra is what I got.
