Fermenting a Barleywine, level of beer dropping in carboy

Good to know. Well the temp is continuing to come down so hopefully I can salvage this without it being to sweet... Its my first try at a Barley wine so here goes nothing anyway right...

Fermenting a Barleywine, level of beer dropping in carboy

Definetally some gnomes in there. I use a blowoff normally because I do yeast starters and fermenting typically is pretty aggressive so it helps but I have never lost any to the blowoff like this. Total I probably lost 2-3" in the carboy. Oh well. So I have it in the garage and the temp is...

Fermenting a Barleywine, level of beer dropping in carboy

Ok, AJF, not sure what you mean you don't like blow off tubes, how else could I handle that level of CO2 and kruesen? So here is where I am at, I pitched in the low 60's and put the carboy in a room that is 67'. The fermometer on the side of the carboy says its in the mid-70's but the room is...

Fermenting a Barleywine, level of beer dropping in carboy

I am using a blow off tube, and no there is no puddle, its going into the blowoff bucket, which I will need to dump... I have lost about 1.5" of beer in the carboy.

Fermenting a Barleywine, level of beer dropping in carboy

So I am fermenting a simple barley wine. Had an OG of 1.089. Used a starter and the fermentation started within about 6 hours. Now after 48 hours the fermentation is going like mad, which is great but the level of the beer in the carboy is dropping. It started out above the top curve in the...

First time Lagering brewing and fermenting plan

PT, its been a month since brewing, its been in a keg for almost 3 weeks. Just moved it into the fridge which sits a little above freezing. It has a great roasty very very slightly sweet taste. Overall very nice. OG was 1.061, and the current gravity is 1.018 which is contributing to a...

First time Lagering brewing and fermenting plan

Let me know how this turns out. I am curious to hear. This weekend is 2 weeks since I brewed. Its still blowing off a lot, I may start moving it closer to the garage door. As it gets closer it will get colder. Think I'll wait one more week to get all the fermentation out of it, then move it...

Secondary in a Corny, serve or rack to new keg

Thanks for the comments Seyahmit. So you have a couple of cornies setup as Brite tanks. you don't serve from them, you just use them to age??? thanks

Secondary in a Corny, serve or rack to new keg

Yooper that makes alot of sense, and I read the other post as well. My only question is if all your doing is transfering, then wouldn't the sediment pass through as well? Or do you pull a little out of the first keg to get that sediment out then go ahead and transfer? thanks

Secondary in a Corny, serve or rack to new keg

So I went ahead, purged both serving keg and secondary with co2, then used my racking siphon to get it racked. The thing I don't like about it is that I wasn't sure how far down I should go. I will bag to dry hop in the future. Is it ok to attach the bag to a string in order to be able to...

First time Lagering brewing and fermenting plan

Ok Racked to secondary today. The kruesen had fallen off. While racking there was a off smell but tasting the beer there didn't seem to be anything off about it. Its gone from a 1.061 to 1.020, there is some sweetness to it, but it will still move down I hope into the 1.016 range which should...

Secondary in a Corny, serve or rack to new keg

BRewdog, thanks for the idea. I'd like to limit the air exposure on this one if possible. Would it be possible to connect the keg the co2, pressurize it, run it for a 30 seconds to get the crap out of the bottom then let it sit for 24 hours with pressure to carb it, or will I be shooting...

Secondary in a Corny, serve or rack to new keg

Secondary in a Corny, serve or rack to new keg

I have a pale ale (extract) fermented, and moved to a corny for dry hopping. I keep breaking Carboy's so I figured I would start doing my secondary/aging in a corney. I bleed off the extra co2 daily. Anyway the question is should I carb it and then serve it. I would expect the first pull...

First time Lagering brewing and fermenting plan

I am making a black lager/Schwarz http://www.beertools.com/html/recipe.php?view=5896 The guy didn't list any fermentation notes so I am reading up and trying to make a good plan. I am brewing today, doing extract, and using the Fermentis s-23, I made a 1 pint starter then stepped it up to...

secondary... just need your thoughts on this

Thanks for all the help. I am meticulous about cleaning and I co2 both carboys before I rack, so the beer in the primary has co2 on top of it to keep it away from ox. Then I fill the secondary with co2 as well to keep the racked beer off ox. The secondary process has just been to clear, and...
