OG turned out lower than I planned - here's what I did. help

Thanks for all the notes. I have an efficiency issue. This was my 2nd all grain batch so I am still figuring out how to calculate the efficiency, as well as get it right for a given beer. I also made the mistake of not adding the sugar to the boil in the beginning. The recipe calls for it...

OG turned out lower than I planned - here's what I did. help

So I am the idiot here. Read the recipe right!!! There was supposed to be 8oz of cane sugar. My guess is that would have had some effect, not sure how much but... I think I have efficiency issues that I will need to handle separately, but for this batch, to try and salvage from here, could I...

OG turned out lower than I planned - here's what I did. help

so the recipe is: 8 pounds pilsner malt 4 oz crystal malt 40 Lovibond 4 oz special B 12 oz Wheat malt The mash was 153, but for some reason my calc was off and I had to add 1.25 gallons of hot water to bring the temp up. But I got it to 153. The gravity from the initial runnings...

    Saison yeast question

Thanks for all the notes everyone. I just stepped up the starter... if I wake up in the morning and its not bubbling pretty strong, I'll head up to mountian hbs... and grab some 3711. I just hoped this would work, makes for a fun story for the beer. Wish I had known this a week ago... Would...

    Saison yeast question

I did 2 cups of water with 1/2 cup of dme... haha so I should have stepped it up at least once, possibly twice... After reviewing your link it also looks like I should be fermenting hot... 70+ is this true.. New to this style, glad I am learning now before I brewed... I can step it up...

    Saison yeast question

OK, so I was at my local brew club last night, and I was talking to a guy about brewing this Cherry Saison tomorrow. Anyway I didn't have the yeast yet so the guy said I could go buy a Saison Dupont from the store, drink the first part, swirl and make a yeast starter out of the last 2 inches...

    Wine barrel project

Fair enough. I think with this specific barrel it will have been used for 2-3 years for wine aging. I guess I am wondering if the wine will add flavor to the beer, I think it would be less about the oak in this case... Russian River's Suplication is aged in pinot barrels. And while this...

    Wine barrel project

There are some options to what was in the barrel. Cab Sav, Sangiovese, syrah. Really any red wines. And actually the more I have thought about this beer, its more of a strong ale, and less or a barleywine. Good notes on the fermentation though, thanks.

    Wine barrel project

I have a friend who runs a winery and is willing to ferment and barrel a large batch (6 10gal batches) for me. I have been brewing a barley wine that has turned out really great, right around 10% abv, not to sweet, and a good malty flavor. My thought is to brew 6ish 10 gal batches ( in know...

Electric Hot water tank with a Ranco controller as an HLT?

A local Seattle guy that has random equipment at random times. It isn't very complicated though. The Ranco is wired in just like the normal controls would be.

Calculating strike water temp - HELP

Thanks for the note on that one. That still leaves my strike water temp at 182'. Isn't that a little high? or is that accounting for heat loss due to the added grain?

Calculating strike water temp - HELP

I saw other threads but I am having a tough time figuring this out. Initial Infusion Equation: Strike Water Temperature Tw = (.2/r)(T2 - T1) + T2 where: r = The ratio of water to grain in quarts per pound. 11.875 lbs of grain (divided by) 3.7 gal (1.25 gt per lb) = .31 T1 = The...

Electric Hot water tank with a Ranco controller as an HLT?

Any ideas how to clean it? I think the temp issue should be fine and the ranco is $50 anyway. My thought was just to run a starsan/water mix through it... thoughts?

Electric Hot water tank with a Ranco controller as an HLT?

I just came across a smaller electric hot water tank. I am double checking make and model to confirm size but it looks like 15-20 gal at least. It also has a Ranco Controller attached to it. I can pick it up for $50, which as far as I know is at least the cost of a Ranco anyways. I am...

First time Lagering brewing and fermenting plan

Cool that you like yours. Mine turned out well. I think the buttery taste/feel faded. I am leaving it as long as possible before really drinking. I also agree on the cappuccino and roasted grains...
