Ahhhh, success - how sweet it is!!!

Man, I hear you. I brew from the 2nd-floor apartment's patio, and that Austin heat is wicked right now. Been strongly thinking about going no-chill, and this may just put me over the edge. What do you use for a fermenter? Also just picked up a 120V 1500W heating element off eBay for a...

    third floor brewing??

I'm a second-floor apartment dweller, but I recently moved here from the third floor and my brewing rig hasn't changed. I'm an all-grain brewer, but I don't have ANY kind of tiered system; just a cooler MLT and a burner to heat mash/sparge water and boil. I do brew on the patio but my...

    Nottingham Yeast

Probably so, but I've made 11 batches of ale in the last year, and fermented them all at ambient temps of 75-80. Not all of them were with Nottingham, but I haven't made a bad beer yet. Oh, and I made two batches of Apfelwein with Montrachet, also at those same temps. Both turned out great...

    Low yield brew day

Funny, I just had to do this calculation myself for the beer I brewed yesterday. ( 1.060 * 4 ) + ( 1.000 * 1 ) = 5.24 5.24 / 5 = 1.048 So, adding one gallon of water at 1.000 to four gallons of wort at 1.060 will yield 5 gallons of wort at 1.048. If you really want to nail 1.045, then...

    Nottingham Yeast

Made Orfy's Mild-Mannered Ale yesterday, and pitched Nottingham. Although I normally just pitch it dry, this time I rehydrated it for 15 minutes in 4 ounces of warm water that had 2 tsp. of yeast nutrient dissolved in it. The packet had been kept at room temperature for several days before...

    first all grain-recipe comments please

Seems reasonable to me. Not sure about the raw barley (might be fine; I just don't know). 9 pounds of grain with 3-1/2 ounces of hops is going to be a pretty damn hoppy beer. I assume that's what you're going for. I'd say go for it!

Hello and thank you from Austin, TX

Do you know of one in the Cedar Park / Leander area? That's where I work and might be more convenient for me. As for the Fireman's #4, I drank the last of it months ago. I would be interested in sampling some of your Haus Pale, since I took a stab at it and although it was good, it was a bit...

Hello and thank you from Austin, TX

My college roommate spent a couple of years homebrewing after college when he was living in another state. I never got to see him brew, but it at least put the idea of homebrewing on my radar. Last summer, I finally said, "Screw it! I'm taking the plunge." I picked up a basic kit from...

Best response to telling someone you homebrew

Many of my friends have either homebrewed before or know someone who has, so they just want to try it. And people that know me well already just ask about how it works. I do live in an apartment complex, though, and so I don't know a lot of my neighbors. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I brewed this as my first all-grain batch. Everything went pretty smoothly for my first go; thanks for making this recipe available! As payment, I offer the following beer porn: this is the Centennial Blonde, pulled from my tap-a-draft mini-"keg". I don't use any Irish moss or anything; I...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I made 5 gallons of this on New Year's Day, for my first attempt at all-grain. Things were a little stressful, but overall it turned out well. After a week in the primary and a week in the secondary, I bottled it on Saturday. I drank the hydrometer sample, and GOODNESS, it tastes amazing...
