Gauging fermentation through visuals and time-keeping alone

That's about the timeline I experience as well. For beers with a 1.050-ish O.G. (or less) I give them 3 weeks before I check gravity and it's usually within a couple points of F.G. then I add dry hops or bottle. For beers with a 1.060-ish O.G. I leave them be for a month before I check...

    Troubleshooting hazy beer

How long are you fermenting? Only reason I ask is I notice that my beers clear up considerably the longer I leave them be in the primary, they stay clear after that as well.

    Yeast harvesting process

Yes, swirl it up real good then pour it into a pint sized mason jar. That will become the starter for the next batch, 150g light dry malt extract per 1.5L of water.

    Yeast harvesting process

Yeah that 100 billion count... just can't bring myself to do it! Way too scientific for my home brewing. I've been over building my starters like this: conventional wisdom says a starter should be 100g of DME per liter of water so what I do is put 150g of DME into a 1.5L starter and place...

    Help! Leaky fermentation bucket lid

    Yeah, I understand. At that point the beauty is in the alcohol level of the beer... that is the true blanket of protection LOL ( ;

    Help! Leaky fermentation bucket lid

Not the same environment in a fermentation bucket as the video... Fermentation is constantly creating CO2 so eventually any oxygen that's mixed will be forced out through the air lock, or so diluted it becomes a mute point.

BEER KITS BELOW COST.....But I need your help!

Almost 2 months in bottles now, for the kit I brewed back in January. It's still green but improving. Will check in again towards the end of next month!

Dry hopping - whole leaf hops

I have tried both techniques, pitching them in directly and using mesh bags, and after several batches prefer using the mesh bag. Pitching them in directly is tough for me when I siphon out of the fermenter. Always end up getting something stuck in the siphon which slows it down... I've...

    First all-grain batch

With that grain bill I would suggest mashing in with 5.75lbs of grain times 1.75 qts/H2O = 10.0625qts H2O or 2.5gal of H2O. The grains will absorb their weight in water (which is approx. 8.3lbs/gal) so divide 5.75 by 8.3 = 0.692gal lost. Expect to get about 1.8gal from the first runnings...

    Keg Conditioning

Yes I typically condition in smaller kegs, 2.5gal, and I usually am shooting for 2.1 to 2.4 volumes for the style of beer I make. It can take just as long for the beer to carbonate as it would if you bottled it so be prepared to wait. I will prime the whole batch when I transfer it into the...

    double recipe, wort collection

Here's how I go about calculating the amount of water I need for a brew day. Looks like you have 19.25lbs of grain there so let's multiply by 1.5 qts H20/ lbs of grain which equals 28.875 qts H20. Divide that by 4 qts/gal = 7.22 gal H20 for the mash. Grain absorption of water is supposed to...

    Recommendations on propane burner?

I like the quiet aspect of my Edelmetall burner and the banjo style burner heats well enough. I can't recommend it though... was disappointed with a few quality issues that I had to fix (some of the burner jets needed to be drilled out). The needle valve on the burner adjustment is just too...

Primary Fermentation Taking Longer Than Expected...

Yah, I still don't understand why those kits say fermentation should be so short. It can, and in my experience, usually does take longer than what is stated in a recipe kit. Wait for it to stop bubbling, then wait some more. Then take a gravity reading and if it has reached FG then package...

Trying to improve color in extract brew

I am only posting to help with answering your question about color, because I've noticed that once someone answers one of these "unanswered questions" a few or sometimes a LOT of other HBT folks will follow suit. In my opinion I wouldn't be too worried about color until it tastes like something...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

And there you have it @Yooper ! I was perhaps one of the first that asked for an Imperial version of this recipe and now there are others that are requesting it as well. So when will the commoners finally get to sample the first run from a XX batch of Imperial Yooper Oatmeal Stout?!
