Spike Conical- observations and best practices

This topic finally got me order a pressure release valve / vacuum break valve. I plan to leave this always attached to the 1.5" port on the lid. The 4" port on the lid wears a 1.5" reducer and the Spike gas manifold. I just ordered a 4" butterfly valve and sight glass to use between the lid...

Brunwater 5.5 pH and Blue arrow Questions

I have an older Mac (2009) running OS v10.13 and Excel v16.41. I don't see a way to set no limit on the number of iterative calculations. I have mine set to 100. You have to sort this out. This is what causing your blue arrows. Without this sorted, your pH will not calculate.

SS Brewtech Infusion Mashtun Filter recommendation

Their updated version comes with feet that attach with screws. They sell the feet separately and are backwards compatible with the original version tuns. https://www.ssbrewtech.com/collections/accessories/products/infussion-mash-tun-feet I recently got a 20 gallon version after years of having...

SS Brewtech Infusion Mashtun Filter recommendation

Another bit of advice, there's about 3 pints of water/wort that fits between the false bottom and the outlet. When those 3 pints run out, the bottom of the grain bed falls apart and you get a good spludge of grist/flour in your kettle. Use an extra half gallon or so of sparge water to keep...

SS Brewtech Infusion Mashtun Filter recommendation

I attached a stainless 80 mesh (250 micron) with stainless lock wire (0.030"). It turns this (or any) false bottom into a brew in a bag, so that's the biggest bits you'll ever get through. Recirculation creates a much finer filter. Here it is almost 40 batches later: after shopping everywhere...

Comments on a Gulden Draak 9000 clone recipe

In BeerSmith, I can get the OG to match, if I set the mash efficiency to 75% & loss to trub and chiller to 1 gallon Brewhouse efficiency is 62.5% with these parameters. Single infusion at 145*F to get down to 1.014, yielding 11.1% ABV. If you have your process modeled well in your software, I...

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Thanks for replying. Your filter is actually the bigger of the two; mini vs low profile. I went ahead and ordered a mini (same size as you) with a variety of filters to see how small I can go without troubles. 178, 100, 80 and 40 microns. I skipped the 15 micron screen, as it has a 915 micron...

75% efficiency? that’s what the recipe assumes.

Spike Conical- observations and best practices

Just kegged my first 15 gallon batch last night. It was dry hopped with a measly 10.5oz (0.7oz/gal). I started with an empty cone when I added the dry hops, having previously harvested all of the yeast, and did not dump any hops at all before racking. When racking into kegs, I was able to get...

Counterflow chiller, tips on how to use it

I’ll give you a single data point to compare. Winter ground water here in Florida was 68*F. Tap full blast, chugger pump wide open too. It took 20 minutes to pump 16 gallons of wort into the fermenter. Wort was at 84*F when the transfer was done. I managed to use about 40 gallons of water. My...

A tale of three people who very precisely "hit their numbers" with regard to the exact same water profile and recipe

The mineral profile of the finished beer matters. The mineral profile of the mash and its interaction with the grist also matters. Lots of variables involved in making beer. Let’s pick a different variable and plug it into your moral statement: I find ^ that ^ moral just as underdeveloped. You...

Building mid pallet sweetness without colour

Try experimenting with different base malts. Pilsner is a different experience than pale malt or 2row domestic. Try different pilsners too (and different pale malts). I found Crisp best ale to be a touch sweeter than pilsner. Castle pilsner sweeter and hay like over Weyermann. You might also...

    Yeast Harvesting

Regarding the initial values on the calculator, I always assume that the calculated overbuild of 100B cells contains exactly 100B cells. I trust the calculator's aging math and build up from there. For years now, every time I overbuild a starter by 100B cells, whether from a fresh vial or from a...
