Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

Is anyone using the AG approach getting a stuck sparge? I've read this can be a problem mashing pumpkin...

    Fermentation/Lager Schedule

You could name it after Aaron Rodgers, since he'll be tearing you guys up this year ;)

    Is "Secondary" Actually Worth It?

You've opened a can of worms. Not to be "that guy" but if you just search for "secondary fermentation neccessary" or "worth it" you'll come up with many different threads. Regardless, I started brewing with Better Bottle plastic carboys (5 and 6 gal). I always went to a secondary. My 5 gallon...

    Bottling a Lager- Primer? Yeast?

I am getting ready to brew my first lager. I plan to ferment in a primary for 3 weeks at 45-50 deg, lager for 6 weeks at 35-40 deg, and then straight to bottles. Do I need to do a secondary? I don't have a secondary- I could rack to my bottling bucket, clean and sanitize my carboy and...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

I don't mean to overwhelm this thread with my postings, but I thought this might be a useful tool for people. Many have said on here that they've had a hard time finding pumpkin around this time of the year, since it's not really a hot seller at the moment. I went to the website for the...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

Thank you for the picture. It gives me a good idea of what to expect. That's still an awful lot of trub and I wouldn't expect it to go down much further. I think if I brew 3.0 gallons I should be able to get 2.5 out of it. I could go on the safe side and just brew 3.5 too- that way I won't...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

I like the idea of the spiced rum. I highly doubt you'll get much flavor of it in the beer, but maybe that'll turn out very nicely with just a hint of spices Seems like it will be high in alcohol content, which might take away from the spice flavors. You should be modeling this off of an Amber...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

When I plug the AG recipe fermentables into BeerSmith, and convert to what I am looking to brew (only 3.0 gallons as a test run), I get: OG Est 1.053 FG Est 1.014 ABV Est 5.11% The Color, IBUs are spot on though I obviously didn't add the pumpkin to the recipe, so I think this is...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

Thank you. I never brew two at once, my buddy is getting some gear so we will be making a second batch. I plan on using starters for all my recipes from here on too after reading about how much better it is fro the taste and overall quality

5 Gal Kettle, 13lbs of grain, am I screwed?

Anytime, this is a great resource, use it. I have learned so much searching the forum and asking questions! Interesting how beer gives us stuck at home something to fill the time and look forward to (I am on a long medical leave and brewing two batches this weekend: pumpkin ale and Munich...

5 Gal Kettle, 13lbs of grain, am I screwed?

This should take you several hours: Heat the mash water Mash for 60 min Sparge should take an hour (just above a trickle), fast enough to fill a pint in 44 sec 90 min boil Cooling You're looking at 4.5 hours. Hope you don't have to work tomorrow!

5 Gal Kettle, 13lbs of grain, am I screwed?

I would boil them to 5 gallons first, then start your 90 min boil in one pot. Although it all goes to the same spot anyways, maybe it doesn't matter. I think I read somewhere that you can count on 1.5 gallons of boil off per hour, so in 90 min you'd have about 5 gallons left. That seems about...

5 Gal Kettle, 13lbs of grain, am I screwed?

Another option: My buddy and I, on our first AG attempt, accidentally used our sparge water for the mash out, and then sparged with a whole new 2qt per lb water. We had a TON of wort (but wow, what an efficiency!). We took my 7.5 gal pot and 5gal pot and boiled the brew down until we had about 7...

5 Gal Kettle, 13lbs of grain, am I screwed?

If you draw off only 5 gallons your efficiency will be 50% if you're lucky. I use 1 qt per lb for my mash and 2 qts per pound for my sparge. If I have 10 lbs of grain that leaves me with my 7.5 gal pot almost to the top (usually I get 6.5-7 gal) Go get a turkey friar set: comes with a 7.5...

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

Did you guys use a starter? Mynstarter jug already has lager yeast going for a Munich helles I'm doing Friday, with pumpkin ale on Saturday. I've never had a problem pitching my yeast into ales without a starter. I don't want to do this incorrectly though Thanks

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

Ah good point, I'll have to look tomorrow ahead of time to see if I can find some. I'm pretty sure I see canned pumpkin all year, I'll give it to my dog if he's hungrier than usual as a filler

Autumn Seasonal Beer Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale (AG and Extract versions)

So what I read in these last 2-3 pages is that people who are doing the extract version are seeing a large amount of trub at the bottom of their carboy. I assume since in All Grain, you mash the pumpkin, so do you still get a large amount of trub? I plan on doing this this weekend.

    Lager starters, how much?

Making my first lager. How big should a starter be for a 5 gal batch? A lot of people seem to make starters at 1L, but calculations would say I need approx 3.2 liters so basically almost a gallon. Need to know so I can either buy a flask or 1gal carboy. I assume I would decant the wort off if I...

What happens if you pitch a lager without a starter?

I am planning my first lager, and I'm curious what happens if I don't have. Starter. I am planning on brewing today, and have no starter ready. Thanks!

Modern Mini Fridge Fermentation Chamber Conversion, Bending Coils

Nevermind... Was very close to being done with the entire break down, but the motor shifted and crimped the coil running out from the pump... fluid sprayed out... it's toast. Go figure, I'm careful the entire time and then a fluke thing like that happens. At least it was cheap Working on...
