"Chunks" of yeast while fermenting Perry

I’ve never seen yeast flocc like that, but I’m sure Miraculix is right. What yeast is it?

What came in the mail for you today?

10G Spartanburg Challenger VI in primo condition. Took me a long time to hunt one down, and a wonderful FB marketplace seller who was happy to ship.

    Solid state chiller / heater

Totally understand that, I did hold my breath when I downloaded it. It’s on an auxiliary machine and the software looks legit so not losing sleep over it.

    Solid state chiller / heater

Only a slight tangent. I’ve been doing buckets for a long time, and actually prefer many things about them. I’d typically be doing Belgians, letting the yeast free rise or using heater wraps and a controller to keep the temp from going too low. I’d never ventured into cooling, but had...

    Solid state chiller / heater

I’ve got the 400: https://www.sscooling.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/thermocube_200-500_productsheet_v1811_email.pdf So far, this thing has been awesome. It’s best quality is its compactness. Next is it’s rock solid temps down to .2 degrees. I’m currently lagering and it’s wonderful. It does...

NEW Product Launch - Bottom Draining Kettles

@SpikeBrewing Will the Tanks be on sale Monday? Will we be able to get custom ports? I’m redoing my whole system and itching to get something done.

    Solid state chiller / heater

After debating DIY glycol chillers, frozen 2 liter bottles and pumps, or sticking with plastic bucket fermenters w/ heat wraps I finally popped for a surplus solid state chiller. I agonized over whether this would have the capacity to raise and lower large thermal mass effectively. I spoke with...

Recirculate with variable controller, no PID?

Sure thing. I said 5500w earlier probably because that’s what I’ve been looking at all day. I’ll have to crack that one open to see what the element actually is. Edit: Yep. 4500w LWD. Probably built that 10+ years ago. There’s a lot better elements to use now.

Recirculate with variable controller, no PID?

Oh no, I have this already using it to control the 240 element in the "special kettle". The heater controller mentioned in my first post is this: https://www.farnell.com/datasheets/44528.pdf It's still just a big volume knob, but it works exactly like using a burner with variable output from...

Recirculate with variable controller, no PID?

Thanks for the reply. I guess my thinking is that this would basically cost me nothing, except for the new element and port, and I could incorporate a PID at a later date. Also, I wouldn't this be just like someone using a direct fired burner and recirculating? Except way more efficient heat...

Recirculate with variable controller, no PID?

Currently I do ~9-10 gallon batches using a burner / keggle, and two 5g coolers. Batch sparge, sometimes an extra dunk sparge if I know my water volume is working as expected. Recently I overshot my strike water temps, pulled some off to cool, then undershot mash. Heated up a couple gallon of...

Brew Built 20 gallon false bottom diameter?

If someone has the 20g Brew Built false bottom, could you measure the exact diameter? Also wondering how tight the gasket is? I'm trying to figure out if that gasket may work for another application. Thanks!

    I finally bought the book

I've got a mini fridge and can only hold one 3 gallon keg. I've retooled my whole process around the 3g kegs, so much that my LHBS named my brewery, BrewBase Three. It's typically just me drinking it, so it works out OK and I've sworn off bottles forever!

    I finally bought the book

The proper way to wash bottles is to keg.

Two Vessel No Sparge has become my favorite setup. Check it out!

I like this. I’ve been changing a lot of things in my whole setup, and mash temp control is my next frontier. I’ve brewed for 30 yrs, and always used simple infusions in two round coolers. I stack them, slide a sleeping bag over them and can hold an hour with a 1-2 degree drop. I’ve done mostly...

Thinking of scaling down my recipes (it is an equipment question)

Excellent tip. Plus, they tend to be more rectangular and make really great washing, utility buckets. Most bakeries will give you a bunch of them. Try the grocery store bakeries.

    Grain Mill power

I just bought the DeWalt 800 to replace my old drill driver and I'm thrilled with this thing. My mill is cobbled together and uses a motor though. I didn’t have a large pulley to get the speed I wanted, so I cut one from plywood, grooved the edge just for proof of concept. It worked so good I...

Hit a wall tonight (maybe before now)....

I’m currently retooling my whole process using 3G kegs as my “unit”. It was born from many factors, space concerns, new fermenter (long story), switching to kegs only, blah blah. I’m actually having fun doing it, and the goal was less beer, brew more often/consistently. Previously I was brewing...

    Second brew recommendations?

This is all my opinion. You will likely make good beers, later some great beers, some excellent beers. Similarly, your palette may be somewhat developed, later much more so. Most people starting out spend a lot of time agonizing over recipes and over complicating them (chocolate coffee rasbery...
