    Pro & Cons of Conicals

I generally only use a secondary if I'm going to bulk age a batch for awhile, or it's one I plan on entering into a competition. Removing the trub would be awesome and I would probably do it if I didn't have to clean and sanitize everything to do a transfer.

    Cold Crashing

I didn't cold crash until I started kegging but I've noticed a difference. I only use a secondary for beers that are going to bulk age for awhile. I leave as much trub in the kettle as I can, but cold crashing a week before transferring to the keg has been producing some real clear beers.

    Pro & Cons of Conicals

I appreciate everyone's input. They look cool but for the money I think I'm going to do some work over the next few weeks on the serving side. Setting up taps, hiding draft lines, and eliminating foam is relatively new beast for me and I'm having fun with it. Homercidal- if I could go back in...

    Pro & Cons of Conicals

I'm putting this here since it didn't really fit anywhere else. What's the big advantage of the conical fermenters? When I started brewing a few years ago only the guys with $$ and wanting to pimp out the brewery had them. Now quality stainless steel ones are available for less than $250 and PET...

Indeed Brewing pulls kits from NB

Small breweries already operate on small margins. If the big guy lowers them more it means fewer will open and more of the ones that are open sell out. Once AB InBev owns a large majority of the craft breweries what is stopping them from closing them down in favor of higher profit margins...

What are you doing instead of brewing this weekend?

Smoked a whole chicken and fried two more. Sunday we eat and watch football.

    Fermentation heater safety

The low tomorrow night is supposed to be in the upper 40's. I'm hoping the weatherman is wrong, but I'm stocking up on emergency supplies just in case.

    Fermentation heater safety

Last spring I bought a chest freezer and an inkbird controller. It is hooked up to a gfci outlet. This freezer is the best thing I've bought as far as beer quality is concerned. Our first "cold front" in Mississippi is coming this weekend and I have rigged up an incandescent bulb inside a terra...

How long have you suffered through bad batch of homebrew?

I haven't had too many bad batches. The ones I have had go in the bottom of the garage fridge. Whenever we have game day parties at my house and someone didn't bring enough beer, they get directed to the "good stuff on the bottom".

    Repairing a cracked carboy...

My glass carboys are full of spare change after I had a big mouth bubbler attempt an amputation. I'm in love with the fermonsters.

    First wife approved beer.

Bottled up an APA I brewed a month or so ago. Wife and a few of her friends ranted and raved about how good it was and how they were glad I finally brewed something for them. The beer was chockfull of fruity off flavors that had no business being there. It tasted like straight apple juice. The...

I can't win - trying to find a good LHBS

I feel your pain. There are only a handful of shops in Mississippi and the only one within two hours is tiny with a rather limited selection. The guy who runs it has a wealth of knowledge and won't hesitate spending time working out recipes and other problems with you. I don't mind tossing...

FAQ: Aluminum Pots for Boil Kettles?

In short. Just because steel is magnetic it doesn't mean it's alloys are. It also doesn't show the percentage of real steel. A 90% mix with one metal may remain magnetic, while a 90% mix with another metal may not be.

FAQ: Aluminum Pots for Boil Kettles?

A magnet not sticking to stainless steel has nothing to do with quality. Some like 304 are non magnetic originally and become magnetic depending on how they are worked, welded or cold rolled. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/identification-stainless-steel-d_383.html If you bought a high end...

PLEASE let the Northern Brewer buy-out be a hoax!

I love this idea. I'd be willing to support in whatever way is needed. I do work in the home brew equipment industry though. Depending on how it worked I may have to pass because of a conflict of interest. Great idea, not worth risking the day job, yet.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Saturday I'm doing ten gallons of bells two hearted clone I found awhile back here in the recipes. Good stuff. Sunday is a 1 gal test batch of wee heavy. Never brewed anything in the style and not sure I will even like it.

    What's in your fermenter(s)?
