How the hell do you name a baby?

This was tough... My wife and I both read through a bunch of baby name books and wrote down our top 10-15 choices. We then compared and found we only had two in common. We chewed on those for a couple months, but still didn't decide for sure until after the little guy was born.

    Let's talk about SMaSH, baby!

I think if you're gonna make these on the hoppy side, you'll want to use a base malt with a bit more substance to stand up to and balance out the hop bitterness and flavor. Maris Otter, Golden Promise, even Vienna would all be good choices.

    Quick hops help!

Magnum is a great bittering hop, and Amarillo is great for flavor and aroma, I think you'll be happy with the results.

    First Post and First Logos

I like the Fraggle hop IPA - funny stuff. One criticism of the font, the H's look a lot like K's to me and the E and R in Brew look pretty similar. But then again, I've had a couple tonight...

    Grain Mill

I've gotta agree that you should buy a grain mill. I don't know anyone who has regretted getting one... I love my Barley Crusher.

    another efficiency question

As samc said, it mostly depends on how good (or poor) the crush is at your LHBS. With my grains crushed by the store I usually got 60% efficiency. First batch with the Barley Crusher it jumped to around 75% and I'm within 1 or 2 percent of that every time. I'm happy with 75%, but I'm still...

two packs of dry nottingham or pacman yeast cake for IIPA

I don't think that I would take a chance pitching on top of that cake. 2 packets of notty will do the trick nicely...

Samuel Smith Oatmeal stout for me. and Bell's Two Hearted Ale was the first IPA I fell in love with.

Coopers Mexican Cerveza, First Time Brew :)

yes it will affect the beer... It will make it better. Most directions in kits say 7 days and then bottle. A lot of people, including myself, leave the beer in the primary for 3-4 weeks or more. By leaving the beer in contact with the yeast after fermentation is complete, you give the yeast a...

    Missed OG

I don't think aeration would have affected gravity readings

    Missed OG

I'm not an expert on extract brewing, but here's the numbers I came up with. 1.5 lbs steeping grains @ 30 points per pound = 45 gravity points (this might be generous) 6.6 lbs LME @ 34 points per pound = 224.4 points 2 lbs DME @ 45 points/ lb = 90 points Total of 359.4 gravity points / 6...

    When to add hops?

For my pale ales I start flavor additions at 20 minutes left in the boil. Depending on how many IBU's and how much flavore you're going for, try alternating .5 oz each of the Amarillo and Cascade at 20, 15, 10, and 5 minutes.

    NB bucket lid?

you really don't need to worry about if it seals 100% perfect. All the lid needs to do is cover the primary to keep nasties from settling onto your wort.

Lag between first runnings and sparge?

I don't think you have anything to worry about.
