    Big mouth bubbler

I have the plastic ones and love 'em but have never seen any mold on them anywhere. Maybe try spraying/wiping everything down with a bleach and water dilution to get rid of the mold and then spray over with a sanitizer. BTW is the mold noticed when you pull out the BMB from storage or after...

    Back to BIAB!

I've used the BIAB method several times and have always had decent results and the cleanup was super easy. Recently, I acquired three kegs and turned them into keggles and started making 10G batches while the bag remained unused. Then I got an idea that why not use the bag in the mash tun to...

    1 yeast pack, 2 batches

I use the technique described here http://brulosophy.com/methods/yeast-harvesting/ It has worked very well for me, I now have several pints of yeast in the fridge I can take out and build up a starter.

What's the best way to attached the temperature controller's therometer on fermenter?

Best method for me initially was to put the probe in a jug of water inside the ferm chamber. After awhile, all liquids inside should come to the same temperature and the more thermal mass you have, the more stable the temperature. I now use a homemade thermowell I fashioned by crimping the end...

What are you doing instead of brewing this weekend?

I'll be making a jig to cut the tops off of two kegs I picked up last week. There is a DIY thread on making such a jig for a grinder and cut-off wheel, but I have the cheapie grinder with handle holes only on the sides. My plan is to put a 90 degree elbow on the 1.25 inch coupler in the hole...

    Fermentation chamber and temps

I will sometimes have multiple batches in the chamber at the same time at various stages of fermentation but I try to use yeasts that all perform within the same temperature range. After sanitation, temperature control is most important here. I've read and heard from several sources that yeasts...

    Lingering bitter aftertaste

Adjust the recipe so the total weight of the hops is less than the grain, that should solve your cat urine problem. But seriously, have you tried First Wort Hopping (FWH)? That may smooth out the bitterness somewhat.

Help me understand gypsum in an IPA?

I got a water report a couple of weeks ago which showed my water pH at 7.9 so I got out my meter and checked the water. The meter drifted between 7.92 and 7.93 which is close enough for me.

Help me understand gypsum in an IPA?

Thx for the reply, I respect your advice as well as many others, I'm sure. It may very well be the meter, although there is one time a while back I used it for a batch in which I used the 5.2 pH Stabilizer product and the mash pH measured on this meter was 5.4. Others have commented on the use...

Help me understand gypsum in an IPA?

I too started using the Bru'n Water spreadsheet recently, you say you hit your pHs just fine, do you mean the Expected Mash pH on the Water Adjustment sheet? Did you add any acid? The reason I ask is that I have made three 5 gallon batches using the adjustments from the spreadsheet and the...

    Water Question

I have a situation with my water treatment and mash pH. I use bru'n water spreadsheet to calculate the water additions and get an expected mash pH, usually around 5.3 to 5.4 but every time it comes out at 5.8. I would like to know what to expect and if I am doing something wrong. I am using the...

Show us your grain storage system

I found food grade plastic 5 gallon buckets at Lowe's for about 4.50 and the lids for a little over 2 bucks. Less that 7 dollars each, I've used a couple of them to hold 50 pounds of grain. When the weather starts to heat up, I will move then in from the garage to a closet in the back room...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Thanks for the help, I'll take all I can get. I checked the Detected Devices section and there isn't another Temp device. When I said the fridge wasn't running when in Cooling mode, the status panel at the top of the web page said it was Cooling, not Waiting to Cool. I swapped the temp probes...

    Grinding malt - quality?

I just ordered a mill and 50# of malt and will venture forth into lands unknown. I use the BIAB method which I have often heard prefers a finer crush for better efficiency. Any BIAB brewers out there wanna recommend an initial gap for base malt?

How long does it take you to rack your beer?

You're just slow. But hey! Relax, have a homebrew while you're waiting. I just racked two batches yesterday, one into a secondary, another into a keg. I think I spent more time getting the receiving vessel clean and sanitized, than I did cleaning up the source container. I don't think it took...

    Muslin bag issues

Is there anything special about the 1" blowoff tubing from LHBS (many miles away) or can I get plastic 1" tubing from Lowes/HomeDepot (just around the corner)?

    IPA hate

I'm going to put in my 2 cents worth then git right outta town. I like some hoppy, but not a lot. It's just a personal preference thing. Then there are the macho yuppie scum types that liken hops in beer to jalepenos in nachos. Yeah, I drink this beer, not because it's good, but because it's got...

HOWTO - Make a BrewPi Fermentation Controller For Cheap

Kudos to the OP on building the BrewPi, put one together no sweat. Working great until I had to go out of town for a week. Wouldn't you know it, the VERY NEXT DAY it screwed itself up. This has been running sweet for three months without a hitch. The graph has several gaps where nothing was...

FYI, fermentors use butterfly gate valves not ball valves...

Reread the OP, must've missed that, sorry.
