Where to use Food grade grease ?

When assembling a keg where do you use grease ? Ive been using it on all o-rings but mainly for the large lid o-ring. Im concerned that any contact with the beer will be a head killer as with any oil - is this a valid concern ? Should I avoid using it on the posts and poppet valves ?

    Hops in carry on luggage?

Thats exaclty the problem. It may take a bit of explaining. Especially as airport security staff are not always the brightest bunch.

    Saison pellicle

I added the ginger at about 20mins. But Im glad you mentioned that - I was considering a ginger "dry hop" (!).

Do I need to boil LME ?

I need to add LME to a Barley Wine - I forgot to add it during the boil. I will be adding the entire 4L bottle which is still sealed. Im thinking that it must already be sanitized, if it weren't it would be infected. Do I need to boil it before adding ? If I need to boil it how much water...

    Sparge device question

Interesting. Something else to try - malt conditioning. BTW - where on your system is your vacuum gauge installed (I couldn't see clearly in the pic you posted). Im assuming on the inlet side of the pump ? What calibration does the gauge have ? Most gauges Ive seen are from 1 to 20 psi...

    Sparge device question

dstar26t - I recently found that when recirculating during the mash I would get grain coming through the lines if the circulation was too fast. Circulation would work well innitially but as the grain bed compacted it would suck more and more grain into the pipes to the point where the pipes for...

    Saison pellicle

yes, it is low. The first saison I made started at 1.052 and finished at 1.004. I pitched this one on the cake from the first. Tastes very good.

    Saison pellicle

Yesterday when I bottled a Ginger Saison I noticed what appeared to be a pellicle (confirmed by looking at photos on HBT). It was about half the size of my palm. The beer tasted normal and I went ahead and bottled anyway. Gravity was 1.000 (OG 1.035 including 1lb of honey). Have I got...

    9097 with Nottingham

On Friday I made an American Barley Wine with the intention of using 9097 (I made a starter a couple of weeks back but brew day was postponed). But, I had a few to many beers etc, forgot about the 9097 and pitched Nottingham instead. When I remembered 24hrs later, there were vague signs of...

    Sparge device question

I brewed on Friday night but I had some issues with a stuck sparge (thick mash) so I didn't get to stir etc. I normally get +-75% for anything over 1.060 and +-80% for lower than 1.060. I use a 40L cooler with a copper manifold which I assume is not as efficient as a full false bottom. My plan...

    Spluttering faucet

I always force carb (chill to 2*C, 30sec shake at 30psi followed by 48hrs at 30psi). Bear in mind I use this method with every keg and never had a problem. But, just to make sure I vented the keg a few times and its made no difference. Also, this keg is carbed from a t-peice which goes to...

    Spluttering faucet

TheBroonery suggested replacing the o-rings on the out post. I suspect he may be right. Or there is something stuck under the valve. I'll get time to try things this weekend. But you're right - if you swop the lines and it still foams then its clearly an issue related to the keg. Ive swopped...

    Sparge device question

Thats interesting. I still can't understand how stirring can help in a RIMS system that circulates for an hour but Im willing to give it a try. Im brewing tonight. How often do you stir ? I also fly-sparge. Im wondering whether your crush is too fine to allow proper circulation. In other...

    Bru's Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale

Im sure David 42 won't mind me posting his thread here : https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f14/proposed-style-guidelines-cascadian-dark-ale-161579/ and https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f14/cascadian-dark-ale-black-ipa-should-new-style-bjcp-161236/

    Bru's Imperial Cascadian Dark Ale

This is my imperial version of a cascadian dark ale. Its turned out really tasty and not too bitter despite the 74 IBU. This is for a 11 gallon batch at 80% efficiency. Quantities have been converted from metric so may differ slightly. Ive kegged the first 5 gallons. The next 5 will be...

    Spluttering faucet

All my kegs have the same length beer lines, they're all carbed by the same regulator and they're all force carbed. I already tried venting the keg just in case - it made no difference.

    Sparge device question

Have you ever compared your efficiency to see if stirring makes a difference ? I don't stir after mash-in (at all) simply because I can't see how it could make a difference but a comarison would be interesting.

    Spluttering faucet

This specific tap / keg is a couple of months old. Im going to try and swop the taps around to see if its the keg or tap. That will narrow it down before I start trying to fix it. Im wondering if it may be something stuck in the output valve or a damaged o-ring (?). I just havn't had the...
