    Mickey's bottles

I don't know if the re-screwed lids will hold the pressure. You should try one out on your next batch while using normal bottles for the rest.

    First time yeast starter

https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/how-make-yeast-starter-pictorial-76101/ This'll show you how to make a starter. If you are using dry yeast you usually don't need to make a starter. Usually just re-hydrate the yeast before pitching.

    Mickey's bottles

This is exactly what I was thinking with the grenades!

    Mickey's bottles

Do they still make the little grenades? Those could be kind of cool to bottle a big IIPA in. Only thing would be drinking it first, and I'm not sure about the screw tops being used again.

    Temperature reached too high

You can put a wet towel around the carboys / buckets. Some people also use wet t-shirts over the carboy for the same effect. If you have a small fan that you can point at it you've just created a nice swamp cooler. I used this this weekend on three batches I brewed to keep the temps down below...

Attn Experienced Pumpkin Ale Brewers - Stuck Sparge Question

I made Yuri Rage's Thunderstruck Pumpkin Ale this weekend. After dumbing down the 21 gallon batch to a 5 gallon batch I used 60 oz of Libby's canned pumpkin baked on a cookie sheet at 375* for 30 minutes or so, 1 lbs of rice hulls mixed into my grains, and mashed thin using 1.5 quarts per lbs. I...

    Strange looking floaties

I'd say those look like yeast rafts. No worries. I'd say let it do its thing. Do you smell anything odd from the airlock?

Free Bottles on Bainbridge Island, WA

Hey, I've got about 6 cases of 12 oz empty, rinsed, mostly de-labled bottles I'm looking to part ways with. Send me a PM if interested in them. I've gone to kegging and SWMBO would like the extra room in the garage.

    So who's brewing this weekend?

Gonna do 3 batches this weekend. I was going to bang them all out on Saturday but I think I might do one on Friday evening after work just so I can enjoy it a little more. Gonna do a Cream Ale, an ESB, and a Pumpkin Ale. Hosting a beer tasting dinner for family and friends in October!

    Types of brew pots

I've heard these enamel coated kettles work just fine as long as there aren't areas where the coating is gone leaving bare metal to rust. I think this is the style of pot Charlie Papazian was using in his Complete Joy of Homebrewing books. I've used aluminum pots in the past, and now am using...

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

Interesting that it dipped so much from 99 - 02. I was watching the Sounders game last night via their websites live stream and was happy to see the hordes of people that showed up at Star-Fire Stadium which is their practice field to watch the FC Dallas vs. Seattle US Open Cup semi-final...

    Wyeast Smack Pack...do I need a starter?

I've pitched directly from a swelled smack pack in the past with no ill effects. I've since moved to making starters though. The starter gets your fermentation up and running a whole lot faster, and isn't all that much extra work if you've got the stuff to make them. You should be just fine with...

Need to postpone already started Starter

I've had my brew day canceled last minute before too. I did what the other folks here have suggested and it worked out just fine.

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

I'm very happy to see the amount of fan support that MLS teams are getting these days. Its nice to see the league finally taking hold. I use to go to the Sounders games before we joined the MLS. They would use two, maybe three sections of Qwest and that was considered a good showing. Its...

    Bottle conditioned IPAs...

If you're looking for more hop presence You can try spreading out your final 4 oz. Try 1 oz at 15 min, 1 oz at 10 min, 5 min and flameout. I've seen my aroma and flavor go up by using this sort of schedule.

    fermenting in a boiler room

Depends on your style. Check the yeast strain and find one that likes that temp range. I think wheats like it warm.

    The [Horribly Unpopular] Soccer Thread

Anyone watch the Sounders vs San Francisco (Panama) Champions League game on Wednesday? I don't have Fox Soccer but listened to it on the radio. I was curious if the Panamanians really were flopping all over the place like Arlo White the announcer described them. Glad we pulled it off though.

    Cost of kegging

I picked up a mini fridge that was already converted to a keggerator, two kegs, and some spare ball lock parts for $75 (from a friend). Then a new CO2 tank cost me $75 I think w/ regulator. Like Hoppus said, keep an eye on craigslist. You can usually find what you need.

    Quick yeast reuse question

Here's how I wash my yeast: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f163/yeast-washing-illustrated-41768/ Once I'm ready to wake them up I pour off the beer on top leaving just the yeast cake on the bottom. Swirl it into a slurry. Let that warm to room temp, prepare a starter, and pitch into starter. Then...

    Wife asks for a brew.

Yeah McBrewskie, I thought of doing a lavender IPA a while ago after drinking a local brew pub's Jasmine IPA which was actually great. I was chatting with the LHBS and they warned me that lavender will likely just give off a soapy taste. I'm not sure how drinkable it would be. I'd go for the...
