    When not to dry hop?

A follow on question: I'm just brainstorming here and thinking towards the future and working out some logic behind designing a recipe - Let's say for the sake of argument an IPA recipe consisted of 1oz Amarillo, 1oz Centennial, 1oz Nugget, 1oz Simcoe. If I was to dry hop this batch also, is it...

    Carbonation question

I bottled my batch last night and slightly overestimated my corn sugar for priming. (It was another mini disaster after discovering my caps not fitting on certain bottles!)...My batch ended up between 4 - 4.25 gallons. I boiled 3/4 cup corn sugar in 2 cups water, transferred it to a jug and...

    When not to dry hop?

Since I've started scanning through IPA recipes, I've noticed many that do require dry hopping and many that don't. It made me wonder what the reasons are for not dry hopping? Surely all IPAs would benefit from it or am I missing something?

    Bottle capping (mini) disaster

That's what I'll do. I hope they do taste ok though, because I slightly undershot my volumes on this batch and ended up with less bottles than I hoped for. Ah well, quality over quantity they say, right?!

    Bottle capping (mini) disaster

I was bottling my second ever batch this evening and everything was going well. I decided to use a mix of bottles this time along with the usual 355ml. I filled all my bottles and began to cap them. Then I got to the Beau's 600ml bottles and realised that the capper would not put a cap on these...

    Recipe breakdown question

Ok great, so the four different grains are used for the AG batch? I think this may be my next brew. Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Recipe breakdown question

But these 'Steeping Grains' are not listed under the 'All Grain Option', so this is where I'm a little confused. Should the steeping grains be added to the two grains listed in the All Grain section, if brewing this recipe as an AG batch? Sent from my iPhone using Home Brew

    Recipe breakdown question

When reading the ingredients for a recipe that gives the various brewing methods (ie. all grain, extract etc), what are the 'Steeping Grains'? Are these to be included in the all grain bill? For example: Hoppiness is an IPA (Jamil Zainasheff) - This recipe has 1lb Crystal 15 & .25lb Crystal 40...

    Hop identification query

A colleague at work told me yesterday that he has hops that grow in his garden/plot and invited me to come over and take some when they are ready to be picked. This got me pretty excited. The only thing is that he has no idea what kind of hops they are, and I being a completely nooby to brewing...

    Wort volume measuring

But if I want to measure Post Boil, then what?

    Wort volume measuring

This maybe a silly question but how do I measure the volume in my kettle post boil? Surely a wooden rod that has markings etched into it would not be sanitary enough to dip into the wort? I have a stainless stirring spoon but I worry about marking it with a sharpie, Surely I don't want to be...

    Yeast rehydrating question

That's good to know. I would hate to have slipped up badly on something so simple!

    Yeast rehydrating question

I brewed my 2nd batch on Saturday and things seemed to go fairly smoothly, except for the part when I forgot to add Irish Moss (which I quickly learned on these forums that it's not a big deal). Anyway, as I was on my way to work today, I was going over the steps of the brew in my head and...

    Ported Better Bottle question

Just to be clear - I can ferment in this though, right?

    Ported Better Bottle question

Oh! Did I make a mistake buying one? The guy at the store told me that it's better to have a ported one and that's what most people prefer. They had sold out of the non ported versions, maybe I should have seen that as a sign!!

    Ported Better Bottle question

Hi there, I'm a beginner brewer and this is the first of what will probably be many questions - I got a ported Better Bottle Carboy today, which will hopefully make transferring to my bottling bucket a little more seamless. But what I need to know is how do I sanitise and flow sanitiser through...
