Ok to make starter wort in advance?

Is it ok to make starter wort hours in advance of pitching yeast? I'm planning to brew on Saturday, and I'd like to give the yeast a good 36 hours to propagate, but I won't actually have my yeast until later tonight. Would it cause any problems to make the starter wort this morning, cool it...

I wish I had never bought...

My biggest pre-boil volume has been something like 8 gallons. I use fermcap, so I'm not all that worried about boilovers. The 15 gallon kettle is just so big, and it's a PITA to move around and clean.

I wish I had never bought...

I wish that I had bought a smaller brew kettle. I bought a 15 gallon kettle, intending to move to 10 gallon batch sizes. 3 years later, I have never done a single 10 gallon batch.

    New Brew System

Looks great! What are the dimensions of that table, and where did you get it?

    Fermwrap on SS conical?

Has anyone successfully used a cooling jacket with an ss brewtech conical?
  6. phillip_h

    Which conical?

Well, I'm planning to implement some kind of water/glycol chiller in the near future. Either an aquarium water chiller or a DIY glycol tank.

    Which conical?

There's no way that I would try to move one of those things when full unless it's on casters. I definitely wouldn't want to lift it into a fridge.

    Old keggle question

I inherited a keggle with a couple of welded fittings recently. I would like to use it as a mash tun, but there's an issue. Whoever welded these fittings did so in such a way that the threads are inaccessible from the inside. I can't get anything to thread from the inside - I guess there's some...

    Which conical?

I already have a submersible pump and a temperature controller, so I shouldn't need the FTSs. I'm planning to use a cooler and switch out frozen water jugs. I only brew ales, so I don't need to get super cold.

    Which conical?

I'm kind of on the fence between the 7 and 14 gallon SSB conicals. I would like the option of doing 10 gallon batches, but I'm not sure that I would ever actually do it.

    Which conical?

I currently do 5 gallon batches, but I want the option of doing 10 gallon batches. I want to harvest yeast. I have tried it in my speidel fermenters but it doesn't work out. I want to be able to dump the trub after a couple of days, and I want a better way to take samples. I want to be able...

    Which conical?

I'm looking at buying a SS conical in the next couple of weeks. I was initially planning to get an SS Brewtech brewmaster's edition with the built-in immersion coils for temp control, but I'm wondering if it'd be more economical to go with the regular version and use a cool jacket for temp...

I acquired one of these things! Any brewing related use?

Nice - I wish someone would hand me one of these. I would use it with an immersion chiller in a conical to control fermentation temps.

    Homebrew podcasts

Many of my favorite movies of all time (including the Big Lebowski) don't shy away from 4-letter words. When I'm around close friends, I use some pretty colorful language in casual conversation. Bad words and sexual content don't necessarily offend me. My problem with these ads isn't really the...

    Homebrew podcasts

Especially when the first 15 minutes has zero content - it's just Jamil and John BS'ing about what conventions they went to recently.

    Homebrew podcasts

the content on the BN podcasts is good, but the commercials are too long, too frequent, and OBNOXIOUS. Can we talk about some of these ads? Why do these advertisers think that their audience is a bunch of adolescent boys? I'm not a prude, and I don't have a problem with profanity, but some of...

Traveling to Galveston, Texas - Beer to Try?

I'll echo the 8th wonder recommendation - the coffee porter is fantastic, and they also do a really good stout (dream shake) and Belgian dubbel (premium goods).

5-6 gallon batches in a 14 gallon conical?

Well, I'm in south Texas, so I don't think I'll ever need to add heat to my fermenter. It's freaking 79°F in December.

5-6 gallon batches in a 14 gallon conical?

I'm planning to treat myself to a new stainless conical (14 gallon SS Brewtech BME) with some Christmas bonus money. Up until now, I have been a 5 gallon batch brewer, but I would like the option of moving up to 10 gallon batches. The only issues that I can see: - the thermowell is...
