Late Mash Additions and pH Effects

I think I have it figured out, we'll see how it works tomorrow. The main mash minus the roast malts will be sitting at target 5.5 pH for 60 min. Then the roasts will be added along with pickling lime to bring it back up from 5.1 to 5.4. This will mash for 15 more minutes and then ramp to mash...

Late Mash Additions and pH Effects

Yes, the mash is essentially done at the point and you are steeping the roast malt in the mash/sparge. I would rather eliminate the need for extra steeping pots, but you can certainly do it that way too. Since the conversion is complete at that point, I'm not worried about the pH of the mash...

    Peabody, MA Water Profile

Looks like their latest report shows Sodium and Sulfate, but not the others that we'd be concerned with: http://www.peabody-ma.gov/dpw/CCR_2014.pdf Perhaps if you contacted the water supervisor, they would give you the additional details: [email protected] (978) 536-5069 That...

Late Mash Additions and pH Effects

Thanks Matt - yep, I'm going for Gordon's technique so perhaps I'll limit the exposure to the last 15 minutes. Sparge water is RO so that should be fine. I'm shooting for a higher percentage of roast based on the comments I've read regarding this technique needing a bit more malt to have it...

Late Mash Additions and pH Effects

I am brewing a RIS and plan to try the technique of late mash additions of the roast malts to reduce potential astringency. The roast malts (roasted/choc/black) make up 11.5% of the overall grain bill. The predicted mash pH without roast malts is 5.4. I planned to mash that for 60 minutes...

    Blaugies Saison Dregs

I attempted to make a starter from the dregs of two bottles of Blaugies Saison D'Epeautre and it doesn't look quite right to me. I began with the dregs from one bottle on the stirplate in a 100ml starter. Good activity within a day and a little krausen. Proceeded with adding the dregs...

Immersion chiller with electric boil kettle

I didn't like the idea of the chiller resting on the element, so I fashioned a kettle hook out of some scrap copper tubing. Worked great.

Here's a pic of the system during a water test: And here's the panel: Maiden voyage - Electric ESB: 30A Single PID, 5500W elements. And come to think of it, this was the first time I have done a mash out in ages...

    Efficiency Boost?

Last weekend was the maiden voyage with my new HERMS system. It was a fun brew day and I'm really happy with the way it performed. I was surprised that I had an unexpected boost in brewhouse efficiency. Previously I would typically get about 80-82% efficiency with a 60 min. mash and 45-60...

Can you use two extra large stainless hose clamps and secure the rocket to the leg of your table and then run silicone hose from the rocket to the pump?

    Exhaust Fan Wiring

Thanks everyone - I'll pick up a 10uF run capacitor and give it a test as suggested. Thanks again!

    Exhaust Fan Wiring

Do you mean it can't be wired for variable speed? What about simple on/off?

    Exhaust Fan Wiring

I have this exhaust fan from a microwave and it has an 8-pin plug. How would it be wired to a dimmer switch or potentiometer?
