Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

Just thought I'd post a quick update for anyone interested. I have now brewed 4 batches with the new set up and could not be happier. Brews have included a grissete, pale ale, porter, and scottish 70 schilling. All have been a breeze. Current mashing process includes adding grain to full 7g of...

    White Labs WLP075 Hansen Yeast

I took a small sample of my Vault strains and put them on slants and made some glycerol stocks I keep in an ice pack lined Tupperware in the freezer. You can get everything you need for relatively little on amazon. Now if I really want to use one of these strains I can pull them out of my vault...

    Recirc eBIAB Kettle Return Options

I just use binder clips that keep the bag so it hangs down just above my element. I went with a ripple running on 120v for 15w/in and have had not even the slightest sign of any scorching or had any trouble with my pickup tube. Also got the binder clips for free from work. Easy, effective...

    Recirc eBIAB Kettle Return Options

I recirc using my whirlpool return arm from NorCal. Very happy with this set up. Keeps the grain moving and the water flowing well. Mine returns at just about the 4g mark in my 10g Spike kettle. I usually let the grain soak for 10 minutes prior to starting recirc. Let's me pretty much set it up...

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

I have really only done 2 brews, one of each so far, with this system. So strictly anecdotal evidence. But, IIRC, the whirlpool arm method gave me just under 80% mash efficiency (wound up 72% brewhouse efficiency). I got slightly less from the locline setup (I don't recall the exact number but...

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

I have only brewed two batches with this set up so far. One batch with each recirculation setup. Both were lower gravity (1.04- 1.05) and done as full volume BIAB. I have no screen or false bottom. The bag was simply held above the element with binder clips as pictured. In these two batches...

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

Glad to hear it helped. Be sure to share your setup pics here or in the custom Spike thread when you are done! As a bonus, on my last brewday I used my whirlpool arm to recirculate during the mash, and it was awesome. No cavitation issues, held mash temp perfectly with my EZBoil controller...

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

What I am using as the diptube is actually the NorCal whirlpool return so it is 2 and 1/8" long not the 3" that comes standard with the TC "diptube". I ordered it 5" tall then cut back and inch or so, then cut the angle to match the kettle bottom. I cut this with a little hand hacksaw and a...

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

I made a pale ale with my friend using the new set up yesterday. Wound up being the smoothest brew day I have ever had. Also the fastest. Right around 5 hours from heating strike water to cooled wort in the fermenter. The Brau Supply controller (with the buzzer problems solved by a quick wire...

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

Very nice part list! While I myself chose to buy the BrauSupply EZBoil 120v, and don't regret it, this is really nice to have out there. For me, who has no electrical experience, none of the few tools one might need to best cut/ strip wire or prepare the enclosure, and just as little free time...

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

Sorry for the delay! The loc line itself i got from amazon prime. great price and fast/ free shipping loc line arm loc line recirculation jets loc line tool (highly recommended) Then I use a 1.5" TC to full 1/2" NPT threaded adapter which can be found through both Jay at NorCal and Bobby at...

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

How about a part list for the lowest cost build possible, then a second for one that uses only trusted components at an average market price?

    Tri Clover Integrated Heating Element

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

Both relays will be set to the alarm function and the buzzer. But using both allows me to have multiple alarms set including the mash timer and temperature deviation alarms. The timer alarm is specific is to relay 2 as well.

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

So the package from BrauSupply arrived from America's hat today. Enclosed was a free hop filter carrying a couple pre stripped wires. So I opened up my EZBoil DRPR300 120v controller per Steven's directions and set to modify the alarm buzzer wiring per the instructions. So...

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

my understanding is the kill switch on the 240v EZBoil only interrupts the power supply to the element

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

yeah, the 2 relays also have a specific alarm function tied to each. Relay 2 can be set to trigger with the built in timers for example. I don't need anything too fancy though so with a few quick wire swaps I should be able to get both relays firing towards the one buzzer and with the rotary...

I've heard a lot abou Auber's EZBoil, but what about Bräu SV240 EZboil?

Steven from BrauSupply reviewed the wiring diagram and discovered an adjustment that needs to be made. This was in a way an one-off or prototype, and there are a few differences between the DSPR120 and 300. Steven has sent me some pre- stripped wire along with a diagram to get both relays...

Show me your custom Spike brew kettle!

I just happened to measure mine yesterday. With my custom beveled diptube as pictured above (likely a touch lower than the Spike NPT version) I had just over 1500mL (about 1.6qt) of deadspace. Perfect if you ask me consiering I use brewing classic styles scaled recipes.

Custom Spike TC eBIAB Build- stovetop plus 120v element

Just completed a water only test with the dip tube in place. About 1550mL left in the kettle after draining. So just a bit over 1.6 quarts for you imperials. I'm very happy with that myself.
