    Cats

I should have named a few of my brews the "Cat Hair IPA" because that's pretty much what's in them.

    bru'n water vs. brewer's friend

Time to eat a little crow... when I changed the values to reflect grams/gallon to fix the error, it didn't save. So I was in fact putting the wrong numbers in. I fixed it and still came out with 4.92. So the question still remains, it's just not off by that much. For the record, it was 4...

    bru'n water vs. brewer's friend

Thanks for the replies folks. At first I entered the numbers in not noticing that it was g/gallon. Before I posted here, I fixed it though and made sure the mash/sparge breakdown to the right of where you enter those values equaled 2g gypsum and 3g calcium chloride total like I said in the...

    bru'n water vs. brewer's friend

Hey all, Trying to make sense of water chemistry (again). I put the following grain bill into both bru'n water and the calculator on brewersfriend.com: 10.6 lb. (4.82 kg) Great Western pale malt 2 °L 1.3 lb. (600 g) Best Malz Munich malt 8 °L 14.1 oz. (400 g) Great Western pale malt...

    Scented Damprid

No, I've done two more batches since and neither of them had that weird flavor/aroma. But it's also colder here now (southern Ohio) so I haven't had a moisture problem. I bought a scent free version, but I haven't used it. I will try it out once the temps start going back up and my freezer...

    Unsolicited water advice....

I like this rule of thumb. I'm one of the people that has been confused by water. I've tried a few times and basically give up every time and continue to buy spring water from Meijer and hope that it works out. My beer is hit or miss so far and I don't know if it's a water issue or one of the...

    36 hrs and no activity

I just brewed a brown ale that had no krausen and no airlock activity. Baffled me to no end. I took a sample and it was definitely fermenting though. I'm going to rack it to a keg in a week or so. I've had no airlock activity before, but never no krausen. I've done around 20 batches.

    2016 Fantasy Football

Wow I had an awful team... it'll take a few weeks, but how does a nut brown I just brewed and something commercial from the Cincinnati area sound?

Pain in the Eis- Overshot OG by a country mile

My two thoughts: 1) Check your hydrometer with water to make sure it's calibrated 2) You said you boiled down to 2.5 gallons, but with shrinkage after it cooled, it should be less than 2.5 gallons. So maybe you concentrated the wort more than you thought?

    All-grain Brewing Alone

Definitely have a plan. My biggest problem with no help is lifting and pouring large pots of hot water and then pouring the wort into the bucket/carboy/fermonster by myself without spilling. No one to hold the fermenter and/or the funnel while pouring.

    DampRid in Chest Freezer

The DampRid worked fine so I picked up the unscented version for next time. I'm just trying to see if anyone made the same mistake and that's what I can attribute the weird flavor to. My brews have been hit or miss and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong on the misses.

    DampRid in Chest Freezer

To fix a mold problem, I found some posts on here about using DampRid in my chest freezer. The store I went to only had a vanilla lavender scented version. Since the fermentor (a fermonster) should theoretically be air tight, I figured it would be fine. It definitely fixed the mold problem...

    Moving a full Fermonster

It's a lot lighter than glass and obviously not breakable. But if you feel more comfortable in a milk crate go for it. You might not injure yourself, but you could waste a batch of beer and/or break your fermonster if you think you'll drop it. Better safe than sorry.

British Brown Ale Nut Brown AG

I did this recipe but had to sub S-04 and one of the specialty gains because of what my lhbs had available. It turned out great so I wanted to make it again but use Nottingham and the original grain bill and it turned out tasting like cold bubbly pond water.... Not sure what I did wrong.

Mashing 1qt/lb of grain - will this be OK?

I ordered from MoreBeer.com and my efficiency was terrible compared to what I normally get. A quick google search told me that this is not uncommon. I went to my lhbs and milled the grains for my next batch and was back to normal. I will only order from MoreBeer from now on if I get my own mill.

    Fermentation chamber got too cold

So it's been over a year and no findings! I was curious what happened with your beer... I brewed the other day and forgot to turn the space heater on that is attached to my temp controller in a chest freezer. I got up to check in the morning and saw that the wort had dropped to 55 overnight...

    Scented Damprid

Did you ever switch it out? I got some vanilla lavender scented damprid and used it. I thought since the fermenter should be air tight it wouldn't matter... my DIPA has a weird taste and I'm wondering if that is the problem. This is the first time I used the damprid. I've been brewing for...

How long do you Fly Sparge for?

I shoot for about 1.5 cups/minute but settle for no more than 2 cups/minute. It's the most difficult part of my brew day. I have a hard time getting the flow rate right. It's almost always either too fast or too slow and I can't find a good balance. I'll barely open the valve and it will be...

    No fermentation again and again

Probably the refractometer reading not adjusted for alcohol. When I first started, I didn't trust that I was reading the hydrometer right so I popped a few open and determined if they were giving me a buzz! :D
