My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

My first visible "baby" hop cones. These are from the Centennial. Oh boy!!! This is getting exciting!

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Well, as I said earlier in the post, I'm not quite sure what to expect. It seems like mine are getting at it pretty well. Of course, I have nothing to compare it to, but time will tell.

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Those things popped out in about a day. I checked on them the day before and I didn't see a thing. Now they are all over the place. Both plants have really done well so far. They are right at two months old and they are about to head up the line!!!

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Is this what I think it is?!?!

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Yeah, I guess they could do that. If they do, I'll comply, but I'm going to let them run for the time being. I have built a makeshift trellis that will allow for about a 20' run of hops and then tied onto the pole about 10'-12' up. Maybe they won't get that big the first year. We'll see I guess.

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to let them grow. Maybe trim some of the bottom leaves just to keep air moving and to limit bugs. Otherwise I'm going to let them take off. I would prefer to grow them in the ground but I have some pretty poor soil here. Very, very wet. This is basically just...

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Well, I'm not 100% sure since this is my first experience in growing hops, but that Centennial looks like it to me since it only has the one shoot that has taken off like a rocket. The Cascade has 3 or 4 shoots however.

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Quick update: The Cascade has begun to bine to the bamboo. My Centennial is approximately 4 ft tall now!!!

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Thank you so much. Yeah, the soil on my property is not the greatest. Very, very wet. I'm afraid that I will have to resort to raised beds or something moving forward.

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

My Centennial is coming along. I believe this is a bull shoot, but there is another small shoot about to pop through. The Cascade is starting to come along too.

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

I'll do my best to keep the pictures coming as we go along. Cheers. Yeah, I'm not expecting much. Just wanted to get my feet wet so to speak. It'll be a fun little project this summer and if I get a small yield I'll be happy. I'm just using buckets because I'm not sure I want to put a ton...

My First Attempt At Growing Hops.

Hey guys/gals, So, this year is my 3rd year of homebrewing. I decided to have a go at growing some hops. I'm going to try to grow them in buckets and if things work well I will try to build a more permanent structure of some kind next year. I bought a rhizome of Cascade and Centennial...

    Question about Fermentation

I mashed at 152F. Yeah, the more I'm reading I've run across a few things that say to raise temp slightly for a few days until 72F. I also don't like messing with it to much as far as taking readings while fermentation is happening. I just wait until I bottle to grab my final gravity...

    Question about Fermentation

    I did a 4 gallon BIAB 8.45 lbs grain bill: - 7.1 lbs. of pale malt - 0.6 lbs of caramel/crystal 60 - 0.4 lbs of caramel/crystal 80 - 0.2 lbs of chocolate malt - 0.15 lbs of black patent malt Gravity was reading ~1.046.

    Question about Fermentation

Hey guys/gals, I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseam before but I wanted to get some opinions. Ok, brewed a brown ale on Sunday. Got it chilled down to about 64F and pitched the yeast and threw it into the fermentation chamber (small freezer w/ inkbird controller). Woke up yesterday...

    Awesome!!!!

    Can't contain my excitement!!!

Good luck guys. You'll do great and have a blast. I've now done about 31/32 all-grain BIAB's since I started. I have no intention of slowing down either.

What BIAB brewing actually is (Mythbusting for traditionalists)

Without a doubt. Even though I've yet to try the 3 vessel method I definitely don't think BIAB is inferior. Like I mentioned, at first when I was researching and was ignorant to it I would have thought so, but not now. Cheers.

What BIAB brewing actually is (Mythbusting for traditionalists)

I'm a new brewer and went to BIAB after about 6 extract brews. At first I thought BIAB was just a "stepping stone" to 3 vessel brewing, but I quickly realized it wasn't when I began seeing all of the aforementioned all in one brewing systems that are being sold. The only thing I might add is...
