    Gelatin in the Keg

Just kegged my go to pale ale. I typically transfer to a secondary but kept this in the primary for 15 days. When racking to the keg I could tell it was fairly cloudy. I figured that once it went in the fridge it would cold crash. It is still pretty cloudy and not that great tasting. I have...

What's your favorite online store for beer kits?

I have always used Austin due to low prices, reasonable shipping cost and large recipe selection. I can see why they don't put the recipe ingredients online. There's a slight premium to buy the kit (over just buying the ingredients) but they earned the premium by testing and putting together...

    Not Hitting OG

I agree. The crush didn't look that good. I have a mill but have never used it. Will have to dust it off and crush my own grain going forward.

    Dryhopping in Primary

I think I will move the beer to a secondary so I can harvest the yeast as clean as possible. The only thing I have to do it in is a keg. Will a lot more yeast settle out to the bottom of the keg? I am concerned about it coming out when u dispense.

No bubbling in the air lock for more than 4 days

Just because there are no bubbles doesn't mean that it is not fermenting. The only way to be sure is to take a hydrometer reading to see if the gravity is less than when you pitched the yeast. If there is foam and "gunk" on the sides it is probably working.

    Dryhopping in Primary

Thanks all for the input. I think I will experiment a little bit to see what works best (while having a homebrew of course). :)

    Dryhopping in Primary

Good point. I didn't even think about that but makes sense since the point of the gelatin is to drop the yeast out of suspension.

    Dryhopping in Primary

I have but always wondered if the hop utilization was as good since the hops are confined in a bag rather than dispersed throughout the beer. Do you still get good aroma and flavor?

    Dryhopping in Primary

Thanks. Second thought, I had been thinking about trying my hand at yeast rinsing with this batch. Would it be better to transfer to a secondary so I don't "contaminate" the yeast with hops i may not use in my next batch?

    Dryhopping in Primary

Has anyone dry hopped in the primary rather than racking to a secondary and then dry hopping? Also, can you dry hop and add gelatin finnings at the same time?

    Pitch more yeast

Thanks for the quick responses. Just checked it again and there is some activity. I may have pitched it too warm and my gravity is fairly low so these could have been the issues contributing to a longer than normal start time.

    Pitch more yeast

It has been 48 hours with no fermentation activity in a wheat beer. Should I pitch more yeast? I ordered wyeast wheat online and fear heat may have zapped it during shipping. I thought about just pouring in another wheat smack pack.

    Not Hitting OG

I brewed today and yielded terrible brewhouse efficiency (55% using the brewersfriend calculator as well). I typically get around 70%. I did my first wheat recipe which I have read about stuck sparges so I used rice hulls in the grain bill. Didn't have any problems with flow (i fly sparge) so...

    All Grain to Extract

Thanks. Does crystal 60L need to be mashed?

    All Grain to Extract

I typically do all grain recipes but need to get some more brew in the keg and don't have the time to set up my all grain equipment. Can I convert one of my all grain recipes to extract by simply replacing my base grains with the appropriate amount of extract and steep the specialty grains...

    Primary Fermentation then Dry-Hop

I have always done a secondary but have been reading on here that they aren't always necessary. I thought an IPA with dry hop additions would be a candidate for a secondary. What types of beer are best for a secondary?

    Primary Fermentation then Dry-Hop

Is a secondary ever truly needed?

    First time brewer question

What beer styles require a secondary? I always do a secondary to add gelatin finnings. Transferring to the secondary gets the gelatinous stirred in well without adding oxygen. It would be nice not to transfer though.

    Summer beer recipe

You should try biermuncher's centennial blonde. It is for all grain but I think he converted it to extract somewhere within the thread. It is a great summer beer and quick grain to glass. Had a nice citrus taste...

    Second AG Batch Help

Thanks for the advice. One other related question. I was shooting for a 6.5 gallon pres boil volume. The last half gallon coming off my sparge was almost as clear as water (I was brewing a pale ale so it was light anyway but it was very clear). I think this lowered my OG. Is it better to...
