yes, but only to prevent overflow - I estimate 5 litres of expansion. A 4 litre jug is not sufficient.

    Unusual Mash Problem

difficult to describe and I hace confused you. by recirc I mean running out of the tap. No pump. Only maris otter and crystal malt. Only when heat turned on. It might be a finer crush, I buy another 25 kilo bag tomorrow so next brew may throw some light on it. thanks

    Unusual Mash Problem

Hello knowledgeable friends, I am a BIAB man, using an extended Burco boiler. I have used the same Maris Otter crushed grain, from the same source, for at least 20 years. The last 4 mashes all behaved as follows. About 30 minutes into the mash, I turn on the heater element at reduced power to...

Fine T90 hop debris in suspension at end of fermentation

Hi all, my last few brews had very fine hop debris "suspended" about 1 cm below the surface at end of fermentation. 3.8% pale bitter, SO4 yeast, chopped irish moss flakes added for last 20 minutes of boil. Enough to warrant filtering before bottling. Any ideas on cause and / or prevention ? Thanks.

    Floating yeast clumps

the finished beer is absolutely fine - I have used SO4 for the last 20 years

    Floating yeast clumps

these clumps hang motionless from just below top to just above bottom. Estimate that in 13 litres of fermented beer, there are 20 or 30 of them. I have a very fine mesh plastic sieve and remove most of them with that.

    Floating yeast clumps

Hi all, my last few SMASH brews 4% SO4 yeast have floating clumps of yeast at the end of fermentation about the size of a match head, the yeast cake at the bottom is reasonably firm. The fbeer they are floating in is very clear. I use a teaspoon of irish moss 20 minutes before flame out. Any...

    Tool to measure abv?

Mattrix - I just looked up the density of ethanol, and deduced the volume of 1 gram of ethanol. It is clearly less then 1.000. I was being a bit tongue in cheek as the required weighing accuracy scuppers it. Having said that, 67 years ago I was taught to calculate density of a liquid using a...

    Tool to measure abv?

1 litre of a 4% ethanol solution weighs 998.93 grams, 1 litre of a 1% ethanol solution weighs 999.73 grams. It is a linear relationship so easy to calculate 5%, 6% etc. So weigh a volume V of your beer, reduce its alcohol, and weigh the same volume to determine the new % alcohol. Pretty accurate...
