    WLP001 Divine Aroma?!

Maybe it's the cleanness of the yeast that lets the other flavors shine throught a bit more. Don't know. Maybe I wasn't thinking straight after several of said beers :-)

Yeast Harvesting from the source bottle

I did this when harvesting Pacman and Pranqster yeast. I served the beer, then alcohol-wiped the lip of the bottle and poured the dregs onto the agar plate and waited for the lawn of yeast to develop. From there I transferred to slants. The plate was nice because it was easy to see if there...

    WLP001 Divine Aroma?!

Haha, good question! I just ferment at my kitchen's ambient temps, but between may and june it was 65-70 in there the whole time. I think.

    WLP001 Divine Aroma?!

My first two ales with WLP001 were BierMuncher's Centennial Blonde (a slightly stronger version), and a Yerba Mate ale. They are both awesome (to my taste anyway), and the one thing they have in common is an insanely delicious honey floral aroma that I can only imagine came from the yeast. Is...

    Warning signs of homebrew addiction

Just reading the news online, the headline abbreviates Attorney General to AG and I immediately think "all grain".

How much light to skunk a beer?

This question has popped up in my mind the last two bottling sessions, probably because of the placement of the windows in my kitchen. How much light does it take to skunk a beer? Can 5-10 minutes of direct light exposure do damage? Also, does darker beer have more resistance to skunking, just...

How to make a yeast starter - Pictorial

I'm a total novice at beer making, but I wanted to chime in here. I just tasted the first beers I made with WLP001, and there is a huge improvement over the ones I made with US-05. I'm sure there were other variables besides the yeast, but in general I've noticed an improvement using liquid...

Storing bottles wet, sanitized, and covered?

Is there any reason why I shouldn't give clean bottles a few shakes with StarSan, then immediately cover with aluminum foil and store upside down in a crate in my garage until I'm ready to bottle? Will the StarSan eat the foil?

Husband wants Mr. Beer for Father's Day, BUT...

I would recommend a full 5-gallon kit. If he ends up enjoying brewing, the equipment in the kit will be more useful over the long run. If he doesn't get into it, the full stuff will probably be easier to offload on craigslist than a Mr. Beer. Also, since you're in Riverside, you might think...

    When to Bottle a Hefeweizen?

+1 on the hydrometer. It gives you peace of mind, at least it does for me. That said, the reason I chimed in is because my latest hefeweizen was brewed on 4/30, bottled 5/14, and we started drinking it on 5/29. It's really tasty! I wouldn't change a thing, and I'm brewing it again in a...

    Warning signs of homebrew addiction

Yesterday I was the passenger in a friend's car. Her radio was tuned to 105.3, and when I saw that, the first thing that came to mind was an OG of 1.053.

Do Not Fear All-Grain Brewing - A Primer

This is a great writeup, and very timely for me. I've been having maddening inconsistencies with hitting my mash temps--one day it's spot on and another day I fight it for 15 minutes. As you call it, the "dump and pray". I'm brewing tomorrow and have been mulling over ways to get a better...

I totally agree, OP, and I've often been tempted to write a similar thread giving thanks. I'm amazed with this site for not only the wealth of knowledge, but the graciousness of the regulars who give it. So there you go everyone, feel the love!
