    Any sloppy brewers out there?

Yooper, may I ask what you use for your alkaline and acid rinses? I've been noticing a buildup on my kettle that won't come off with regular scrubbing. This is the first I've heard of beerstone, so I'm really glad you mentioned it.

Do I Dump my Beer? Waaa!

Is it possible that you have uneven carbonation? If one is flat, there's always the possibility that another bottle in the batch will be overcarbed. Still, cane sugar should work fine. As others said, wait a little longer and see. Also, if you don't like the beer for drinking, use it for...

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

It wasn't so much the load switches that made me nervous. Once I had it wired up and plugged in, it made more sense. The whole thing was just confusing at first for a wiring noob because there are several "correct" versions of this project posted online.

They sure don't. Pardon the hyperbole.

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

Me again. I was hoping I'd hear back from someone before I plugged in and exploded my garage, but I plugged in anyway and garage is still standing. My controller is up and running well, and seems easy enough to program. The only difference between my controller and the OPs is that mine came...

    ebay aquarium temp controller build

I have a couple questions about the OPs wiring, and since I've never done any wiring before they may be dumb questions! The photo looks a little different from the schematic so I just want to clarify. Here's what looks straightforward: Hot goes in at channels 1, 5, and 7, hot goes out from...

    Brewing around a cat

My husband and I have a cat we love dearly, but my husband is from Peru where people are known to eat cats. We joke about it all the time. A cat that big must have a pretty good tolerance for beer!

Clear beer in carboy suddenly cloudy again

Nope, I didn't move it at all. Whenever I move my carboys to the kitchen table for bottling I can see some stuff that gets unsettled, but it's nothing compared to what I'm seeing in the carboy I'm talking about now! I guess I'll wait a couple days and take another gravity reading to make sure...

Clear beer in carboy suddenly cloudy again

OK, thanks everyone. It was just odd since the last beer I dry hopped didn't look anything like this, and the hops settled out completely in a week.

Clear beer in carboy suddenly cloudy again

Hmm, it really didn't look like hop particles. I would expect those to be more green, and I would also expect them to settle out after two weeks. It looked more like yeast in suspension. I do plan on cold-crashing, so we'll see what happens.

Clear beer in carboy suddenly cloudy again

I brewed a pale ale on 3/25 and dry hopped it a week later. I used S-05 yeast. At the time I put in the hops (pellets dropped straight into primary) the beer was mostly clear with just a touch of residual krauesen floating on top. When I looked at the carboy again yesterday I noticed the beer...

    Makeshift Hydrometer

Doesn't the refractometer get a little complicated when it comes to final gravity? Don't send back the scale! You can use it for measuring hops, priming sugar, or anything else in your kitchen.

Is your brew day like a work day?

OP I think different people naturally move at different paces. Yours is more brisk while your buddy's is more leisurely, and if you did other activities with him you might discover that's just his natural speed. I've always brewed alone because I have my rhythm down, and I think at this point...

    Beer dreams

Another thread in the Beginner's forum about a blowoff tube made me remember a dream I had the other night. I had just brewed a saison and ended up with a bit more volume than I expected, especially after adding the liter of yeast starter. To prevent any possible mess, I put in a blowoff tube...

    Mash dropping fairly rapid...

GrantH, did you say whether or not you were preheating your tun? I mash in a 5-gallon drink cooler, and during that initial preheating stage it loses a lot of heat. I typically add my mash water to the tun at 180F and let it preheat the tun. The water will cool to 170 within a half hour or...

Breaking up the brew day - mash the day before

There are a few threads here about mashing in at night, then waking up in the morning to continue with the brew day. You would have to mash at a high enough temperature that it wouldn't cool off enough to let bacteria get a hold. I bet you'll even see related threads at the bottom of this page.

Nori sheets as fertilizer and supplement?

This website gives nutritional analysis for another species of Porphyra algae, which I imagine is similar to nori. They list the boron at 33.4 ppm. It would be interesting to compare the nori nutritional information with commercial seaweed fertilizers. My guess is that the nori sheets...

    Pressure and crown caps

Thanks for that thread, dcHokie. It looks like you were curious about the same thing. great avatar, btw! Now I must go about further building my Belgian bottle stock. I'll start tonight at the grocery store! :D

    Pressure and crown caps

Does anyone know how much pressure a standard crown cap can take when capped onto a heavy Belgian glass bottle? I'll be bottling a saison in the near future and I'd like to give it over 3 volumes.
