Dark grains late in mash and absorption

Always heard .125 gallons per pound was standard. I have used that as a parameter in my Anvil 10.5 for as long as I have brewed with it.

Dark grains late in mash and absorption

Recently did a recipe for an imperial Porter with lots of dark grains which I held and added at with 20 minutes remaining in the mash. I assumed grain would absorb about 2 gallons with the 17 lb grainbill. Ended up only absorbing 1-1/4 gallons. Would holding back the dark grains be the cause...

Sour … what do I keep doing wrong?

And be aware that cleaning and sanitizing are tow different things. Star-San is a a sanitizer. PBW or an alkaline brewers wash are cleaners. Clean, then sanitize.

    Need some quick help

If it is pre-boil then most likely hops had not been added yet. So bitterness should not be a factor. Sorry. I did not read all post before responding. Carry on.

Ph not changing at all from mash PH?

Would that sample need to be degassed before taking? I don’t have a Hanna meter so I don’t know how large or small your sample is.

All my beers have this overpowering off flavor after bottling

Yes. Water is something to look at. How are you measuring ph?

Had the bottle conditioning on its side, Is this all yeast of something else?

I think it is candy sugar that did not perform as expected.

Extract Brewing high original specific gravity

I think you got a stratified OG because of inadequate mixing of wort. I don’t believe your recipe would call for an OG that high but we will see once you post recipe.

Not hitting numbers with new base malt.

With the issues that many malsters have had with the current barley crops I might suspect low protein levels. Just a guess.

Stuck recirculation BM’s Cream of 3 Crops

Have you checked out your pump to be sure it is working properly? All the other factors involved seem to not be real problem issues. The thickness of your mash should have been really loose based upon what you have stated. But unless you absorbed ALL of the mash water (unlikely), I am baffled.

Help with water report and water softener

Why is water softener water bad for beer?

When to cold crash the Kveik NEIPA?

Cold crashing does not stop fermentation. It merely slows it.

I've been invited to do a pro/am brew. I'm stoked!

Yes. Huge congratulations to you. Nice work.

Stuck recirculation BM’s Cream of 3 Crops

Does Minute Rice make a flaked rice? Or did you just add rice kernels?

Adding priming sugar too early ☹️

Not a big deal at all. It will ferment out and just reprise when ready to bottle or keg. Your ABV will end up higher.

    Low efficiency with malted corn

There is an article in the current issue of Craft Beer and Brewing about corn. It is very common to only get around 60% efficiency unless using enzymes. Even on commercial systems.
