I mean your only making beer in your starter for all intent and purpose. It may be un hopped beer. But the volume of said starter shouldnt effect the over all flavor in a noticable manor.

I just pitch my starters stright in at high krausen. I have never had any bad effects from it.

I use a secondary sometimes as well, it depends on the beer I am makeing and weathor or not I am trying to bulk age the beer.

Vinegar is one of the best things to clean copper. Make sure you soak it in water and run water through the lines after a vinegar soak. You dont want to add that flavor to your beer.

You are on the right track as far as useing a wheat beer for a fast turn around time. Alot of hefes are drunk in what would normally be a green stage. But as far as christmas it would be hard. You could probably do new years if you brewed today.

I would say it depends on what you are useing. If it is powdered or in a liquid form, I would say at bottleing. +1 on useing the bean. I typically use just 1 large vanilla bean for 5 gallons, for a half batch I'd use half a bean. 1 bean gives just the most very subtle hint of vanilla after 1 week. In my exsperiance. By the way Im no exspert either. This is just my 2 cents.

Gelatin will strip alot of the pumpkin flavor out of your beer. Its the cloudy pumpkin particles that are going to give you a good pumkin flavor. It would just be easier to steep with lower volume of water. A person normally steeps grains in 2.5 gallons and then tops off to boil amounts. Thats not to say it couldnt be done the other way but since you are putting a "tea bagging action" on the steeping grains it might be less mesy with the...
