    Confession Time

I've made 3 batches in my recently acquired 27l brewferm pot with an integrated heating element. 2 times I've forgotten to turn the power off when I started to cool the wort with an immersion chiller. I didn't even realise the power still was on for about 5 minutes since my chiller is so...

    Salty Liquorice Porter

Took a gravity measurement of this during the weekend. Was at 1.015, which is a bit higher than expected but I'll let it sit for a few more days. The first whiff from the fermentor made me think that this had spoiled or something. A few minutes in the glass and the smell got nicer. Pretty mild...

    Salty Liquorice Porter

I just brewed this on saturday. I will update here when I bottle it and get a first impression. Liquorice is pretty big in Finland so we have lots of products surrounding it :D One thing I noticed straight away is a pretty nonexistent krausen despite some vigorous bubbling from the airlock. Hope...

    Salty Liquorice Porter

So the GF wanted an over-the-top liquorice porter. She also wanted to follow the brewing process on the side so I made a modified version of my smoked porter recipe that worked really nicely. I made a small batch and used only a total of 2.4kg, or a little over 5lbs of malts which made for an...

    Forgot to rack, cold crash?

The carb tabs need to be dissolved for the yeast to be able to ferment the sugar and carbonate the beer.

    using old yeast

There are almost always live cells left. The calculator just assumes 0% viability past a certain age so I usually pick a date where it's 1-2% and make a starter based on that. Have used several 2 years and older yeast packs this way.

    What are you drinking now?

Suomenlinnan Panimo - Hoppe IPA. A nice beer from a rather small finnish brewery. At a bar close by my house where I can smoke a pipe in the smoking room on the side. It's so cold I dont feel like standing outside with the pipe.

    Confession Time

I have used Wyeast packs that were 2 or 2.5 years past expiration date. Just have to use a 2 step starter. The reason for doing this is that my batch size is about 2 gallons and a pack of fresh Wyeast here goes for around 10 euros. The last time I got 3 expired bags for the same price.

The reason why SWMBO hates homebrewing thread!

The girlfriend does'nt like the smell in the house after hop boiling. She's a good sport though and takes a sip of everything I ever made and the answers have ranged from "not completely ****" to "this is pretty good". I noticed that she's started to become a bit of a hophead. Few days ago...

    I did it.

It's a beautiful moment when you can get drunk on your own beer for the first time :mug:

    Greetings from Finland

Hi, I have been reading the forums for a few years now. Decided that I would try to start contributing, instead of just lurking in the shadows. I live in Helsinki and currently brew with a simple BIAB setup. I am thinking of building a more advanced system with a larger capacity and a bit...
