March 815 Intermittent Flow During Whirlpool

You got it. The NPSHrequired goes up as the flow goes up. The NPSHavailable goes down as the temperature goes up. The NPSH available at boiling is by definition the vertical head above the pump, less suction losses. The rattling sound is your pump destroying itself. It will chew up impellers...

    castle malting

I have used their malts, and like them. The pils is nice as are the specialty malts.

Did I mess up my starter?

Might have killed all the yeast. Or if not, do you really want to drink Star-San?

    oxygen canisters from home depot

Bought three Bernzomatic containers today for $9 each. Got them at the local Ace, Home Depot didn't have them. The regulator I think was $30? I forgot what the diffusion stone was but it bubbles super hard if you turn the regulator even a little bit more. Can't imagine what a big set up would...

help me spend money on all grain setup

When that judge tastes your beer, they won't have a clue how good your system looks. Only how good your beer tastes. :p

Looking for advise on modifying second brew

Your recipe is a Guinness type stout. Unfortunately they used Cascade which is an american hops. I'd leave it as is or add just the 1 lb LME no other sugars. One pack of S-04 pitched dry into that wort will be fine. Your focus should be on having the ferment happen at around 64. This means...

    Foam removal on boil?

I skim after the hot break. Then add hops, and no more skimming after that. Always bottle condition. No issues with head typically.

    Is this too much headspace??

Agreed. Just keep your airlock full, and replace sanitizer occasionally. And cover it up I always put mine in carboy boxes. Light ain't good!

Question: 2nd All Grain Batch American Stout

It will be a little lower in ABV, should finish slightly faster. I made a very similar beer yesterday, came in low too on 10 gallons. Got more than 10 gallons, around 11. And that's after 100+ batches. Ooops! So, good job. The more important thing from my experience is to keep ferment...

    French press

We tried it at a meeting. Both leaf and pellet mostly pellet. Right before consumption. Waited maybe 5 mins. Screws the carbonation up, makes it flatter and foamier. Well I wasn't too impressed, but it was interesting. Citra came out ok but mostly hmm...

    Demijohn

No need to prime it in the demijohn. Usually at some point, and before a couple of months, it would be better to just bottle it. Then age it in the bottles. Use oxycaps they will help you avoid oxidation while aging.

    Bottles

I doubt you could cap one with threads. Some other ones like Pils Urquell you can't reuse either. I use the red plastic flip capper takes a bit of practice slamming it on just so and down cause it's got a magnet in there that isn't a blessing. But I like the ease of it light and moves around...

help me spend money on all grain setup

Can you go vertical? I just used cinder blocks, cheap and easy to stack and stable unless you live in earthquake areas. Just pull my kettles off and store them away, the cinder blocks are weatherproof, and fireproof, and zero problem putting burners on. Anyway homebrewstuff.com has good...

    smoked pumpkin ale

Here's what you do instead. Take 1 lb. of quaker oats, and toast them along with your pumpkin at 350 for an hour. Spread the oats on a cookie sheet, preheat your oven. Turn once at 30 mins. I think you want a toasted type flavor, not smoky. And oats add that, and would compliment the...

    Maple Pumpkin Ale idea

Think I would eliminate the coriander completely, and cut the nutmeg in 1/2. Remember to the canned pumpkin has spices already. I'd add the maple for bottling and if you want some late in boil. Cheers.

    Female Home brewer's Club

How would women react if a man were to start a "Women Hater All Hee-Man Brewing Club"? Probably get some bad press or even charged with a hate crime.

    Dry yeast expiration?

I've had dry yeast in my fridge for a few years now. They are 2010 and 2011 expiration. Used the last of the 2010 in a pale ale recently. Took all of 24 hours to show krausen, when pitched directly dry into the wort. US-05. S-04 same thing a month ago on an English IPA about 7% ABV. Go...
