Ferulic Acid Rest with BiAB Question

Hey guys, I'm planning to brew a Bavarian Hefeweizen this weekend, and been researching on how to get banana flavors. I keep hearing that in order to get that, you need to do a ferulic acid rest at 110 for 20 minutes before the mash at 153ish. So if I'm doing a BiAB, would I do this by resting...

Cheap swing top bottles used - are they ok or should i rebottle?

Should be fine but second the not using clear bottles. And yeah if you're worried about bottle bombs, put them in a container. I usually put all my bottled beers in a cooler for about 5-6 days until they're ready. If they explode they have a couple layers of plastic to get through (though...

WB-06 Ferment Temp for more Banana Flavors (Hefeweizen)

I built it following a recipe. I didn't think the beer was bad, it was just missing the banana flavor, which is what I wanted. Trying to replicate the hefes I had in Germany, and those had a good balance of banana and clove. The one I made just had clove. Let me know how that brew turns out :)...

Best rationalization that Beer doesn't give you the belly

I can't fit into size 34 jeans without a belt ;) I've always loved beer and really got into brewing since I started. It's just that my first love is surfing, so I spend hours on end paddling into waves in Hawaii. Also spend 5+ hours a week in the gym, always took fitness seriously. But it's a...

how often do you try a beer out of your normal style range??

Not often, I'm pretty particular about the beer I like. My favorites are IPA's and Hefeweizens and I usually stick with those. If I'm brewing for a crowd I make Pale Ales or Golden Ales, but not my personal favorites. For some reason I'm craving an Obsidian Stout float, but not sure if I want...

WB-06 Ferment Temp for more Banana Flavors (Hefeweizen)

Can't I already ordered a pack of 5 so I gotta use them haha. I do notice on some research with that yeast though, pitching temp seems to matter a LOT. I brew mostly IPA's and don't really care if I'm pitching anywhere from 55 to 70, and get consistent results. with WB-06 I've seen two people...

WB-06 Ferment Temp for more Banana Flavors (Hefeweizen)

Shucks. I was hoping this time around and with a different yeast strain I could get that banana flavor. That's what was missing when I tried my own hefe compared to the one i had in germany. Anyway I'll try the higher temp, I'm thinking in either case if I wanted banana flavors, 68 might have...

WB-06 Ferment Temp for more Banana Flavors (Hefeweizen)

Title says it all, does anybody have experience with this yeast? I only tried making a hefe once before, and was disappointed with the results. It wasn't a bad beer, but it was missing the banana flavor that the hefe's I tried in Germany had. I did read elsewhere that you have to ferment this...

When you get more liquid than you anticipated

Thanks. I added water before the mash, so i just started off with more. I don't think it's too diluted since my OG was 1.070 :D But yes I probably added too much. My immediate thoughts after racking was "well this is going to blow over, no question about it" lol. I'm not using an airlock, I'm...

When you get more liquid than you anticipated

Just an irrational fear that the tube will somehow get clogged and I'll come home to an exploded carboy haha. Though I haven't heard of anything like that happening, and everytime I had blowoff everything was ok. I added a few cups to what I usually add to, pre-mash. When I do a higher gravity...

When you get more liquid than you anticipated

Perhaps, but I don't have an outdoor setup, so I've had to stick with 3 gallon carboys and doing 2.5g batches. Usually I don't need a blowoff tube with higher grav brews (end up getting less liquid), so this time i compensated and added a couple more cups to the mash. ended up with a carboy with...

When you get more liquid than you anticipated

And you know for sure there'll be some (or a lot) of blowoff. What do you do? Just curious haha. I just made a grapefruit IPA which looks like it'll be awesome (OG 1.070), but ended up with much less headspace than usual. Day 1 of fermentation and it looks like it's already near the top, lol...

Is There a Bad Recipe ?

Try an all caramel malt batch and let us know how it goes :D

First stab at all grain. Any must make beers?

I'd say go with one of the clones. Pale Ales are pretty forgiving and hard to screw up. And if the recipe is something you already like, there's a high chance that the beer will be something you'll enjoy.

    Post to Beginners, READ!

My advice from a pretty new brewer but with over 20 brews under my belt now. Get a form of temperature control, because that's probably the most important thing for getting a good beer. I bought it when I was a total newbie hoping I wasn't overspending on a new hobby, but with the beer I've...

How much cane sugar to prime 22 oz bombers?

Hey! Just wondering for anyone who individually prime bottles with sugar (I know some of you are out there), how much cane sugar would I use to prime a 22 oz bottle? Would 1tsp be overkill or the right amount? I currently do heaping 1/2 tsp for a 12oz bottle, I'm guessing a level 1 tsp for a...
