Prototype Previews: Hopback and Heat Stick

Yes, for a 30A circuit (4500w on 240A) you would need 10 gauge wire. It will fit, but as Bobby mentions here and in the writeup on the website, you need to strip the outer insulation from the cable and just run the separate wiring. Get on youtube for ways to pull wiring thru conduit...you need...

I need a frivolous Christmas Present!

+1 to the kegging setup....that can be done for about $300 and you could still get a mill. I have found that alternative beverage has good deals...also adventures in homebrewing.

Yep, put me in for one of the Hotrods too ;) Looks too good to pass up.

    Sanke mashtun insulator

I made one for my HLT today too....it uses a 5500w element and I intentionally used a smaller slim quarter keg so I can mash in that much faster. This should speed things up even more :rockin:

    My new system (HERMS)

Not sure I understand how the tube works on the FB....you would probably draw air into the pump if draining from the bottom valve. However, it would make a good recirculation port kind of like a Speidel Braumeister.

Fermentation Temperature Commercial vs. Hombrew... What Gives?

+1 to the pressurized fermentation. Commercial breweries often use pressurization to reduce off flavors, and they can ferment at higher temperatures which means less $$ to control fermenter temps. Not to mention, they have very advanced filtration systems which remove the yeast and help...

    Sanke mashtun insulator

Just used it today brewing an IPA. I mashed in a little low at 140 (it was a bit chilly outside and I lost temp through my hoses) but in an hour it didn't even drop a single degree. I think the open area above the thermometer is begging for a logo of some kind.

Anybody using the Jaded Brewing HYDRA Wort Chiller?

Plate chillers are great, and not that hard to clean. Backflush it....it'll take 30 seconds. However, you have to have added filtration in the BK, and to me, that is the real issue. Beers come out way less hoppy if you use bags or even a ss screen....the hops just can't circulate and he...

    Blichmann BrewEasy

Nice looking system! Is there adequate ventilation for the boil? I see some holes on the sides...I wonder if an exhaust pipe can be fitted?

    Sanke mashtun insulator

Not really sure...got the fabric on ebay as part of a lot....they were just assorted 1/2 yards, etc. for about $30. The mat was just laying around...and the reflectix is about $16 with lots left over. Of course you'd need a sewing machine that can handle this thick of fabric. It is way...

    Sanke mashtun insulator

Decided to make a keg "coozy" today....I've been losing lots of heat and my beers just aren't up to par. I used to love my igloo 10 gallon mashtun, but I'm not a fan of plastic leeching chemicals into my brew. It's made of 1000 denier cordura with a yoga mat lined with reflectix. I have a heavy...

Can you leave elements submerged overnight?

It's probably because of all the reasons listed above...plus it's a piece of stationary equipment. Equipment does use gfci, especially industrial stuff but it is design to protect wiring, etc. from overcurrent/damage and it trips far above 5 miliamps which is considered the lethal current...

How to add permanent volume markings to a kettle (illustrated)

Don't forget to level the vessel!!!!! Otherwise, you'll be way off! And, wherever you brew....check your level. Otherwise, measure from the center with a rod and call it a day.

How to clean fresh flux from work?

In the future, you can keep a damp rag nearby and after waiting a few minutes for the joint to set, you can easily clean the flux while everything is still hot.

    Lots Of Crap In Kettle

Recircing is going to be your #1 fix. You could also have the wort outlet go into a mesh bag as you recirc back on top....sort of a double filter. Then there's making sure you get a good hot break (skim the sludge) and cold break. Be sure to use whirlfloc right at the very end (not last 15...

    Plate/Counter Flow Chiller & Trub

Of the two, the CFC will be lower maintenance and require less pre-filtering equipment/techniques. But, it will still harbor stuff in nooks and crannies you can't reach. I would go for the CFC if you want something more "efficient"...but consider that a lot of people come full circle and go back...

    Hop strainer?

This is awesome...probably a first! Why didn't I think of that??? I would be really interested in seeing: 1. A nylon bag that has been used for some time (to see if they melt and thus clog more easily with use). 2. Both materials actually full of hops right after the boil. You could see...

    Tube & Shell Heat Exchanger

It takes a LOT of practice and dedication to learning from your mistakes...especially TIG. I am betting pretty comfortable with fusion welding and was really happy with how the endcaps turned out...very close to being professional quality. Two handed tig in awkward positions, etc. is a whole...
