ugh, found an earwig in my mug

I drink from copper that's solid so couldn't see anything in the mug. Getting down to the last few swallows I felt something in my mouth, so spit it out on a napkin. My wife identified it as an earwig. Didn't know what an earwig was or how and when it got in my mug. I hadn't been outside...

How I brew ten gallons in a fifteen gallon Kettle BIAB

The rule of thumb is half the kettle size for BIAB. My problem is I keg with 5 galllon kegs. After getting tired of having a keg and a half I came up with the following procedure: I am using a 1.2 megapot from Northern Brewing it's a 15 gallon pot that has some leeway above 15 probably...

Survey: Lets hear why you prefer Propane over Electric Brewing

I posted to this thread a couple of years ago. Since then, I've had several good cash flow years and have thought about upgrading my system to electric. I've got space in the garage I could use. After looking around and pricing various setups and thinking it through I've just decided to keep...

    Topping wort off.

Thanks Dgallo, for the link to the video. Will watch it carefully and bookmark.

Anybody else using Oxyclean instead of PBW?

Ooops, it should be spelled OxiClean. There's no discernable scent on the "stain remover" which I have been using so I thought I was using "free." I just used what my wife had on hand. That should be an easy fix to pick up some OxiClean free. Glad I started the thread. There's always more I...

Anybody else using Oxyclean instead of PBW?

I started out using PBW because professional product and all that. I have two Spiedel plastic fermenters, that when using PBW always left a faint beer smell although they had been thoroughly cleaned. A buddy of mine, swears by Oxyclean, so I tried that. Guess what? No residual beer smell...

    Topping wort off.

Rereading the thread "A very gentle simmer with enough circulation to expose all of the wort at the interface with the atmosphere is sufficient in a very short time." Does this mean that sometimes shorter than an hour is better? I started doing a "gentle simmer" more than a year ago...

    Topping wort off.

Thanks to You and Robert65 for your posts. I have been routinely boiling an hour and a half, primarily because I understood it to be better beer. I will change that to an hour boil, for the reasons mentioned both posts I routinely top off my grain generated wort to be able to do ten gallons...

How to turn down the heat without turning down the abv?

I do BIAB. I'm not aware of any problems that come from crushing grain too fine, at least with BIAB. Might contribute to a stuck sparge, but since I don't sparge don't know.

    Kegging & Carbonation

I secondary in the keg. Have been kegging for several years. Haven't tried a stone. Haven't said that, I follow the theory that anything you can do with the least effort works best. I put the keg in the kegerator at serving pressure and leave it. The flavors smooth out about the time that it's...

    Converting Extract to BIAB

I'm still using Beersmith 2.0 which is cheaper and doesn't require annual payments. It does all I want.

    Cold crashing Questions

I cold crash in the keg, when I put in the kegerator where I consider it to be secondary fermenting. I now just let the keg carbonate at serving pressure. It settles down nicely about the time it is carbonated

    Is this normal for S-04?

Thanks guys. I'm going to take a look into Tilt.

To Brewbama What equipment did you use to generate that chart? Looks like something worth doing.

Need basket for 62qt bayou classic kettle

You can call Chad at Arbor Fabricating, give him your dimensions and he will make a stainless steel basket to your specifications. He makes up some of the baskets used by system sellers. I've been using one of his baskets instead of a bag. Works for me.

    Tannins with BIAB ?

"nothing says you have to use any particular temp." I use a stainless steel basket instead of a bag. I place the basket over a cooler after draining into the kettle and then sparge with about six quarts (?) of water around 150/151 or so, after that I take a disc and press the grains to get all...

Less efficiency with 11 gallon batches vs 5.5 in 15 gallon pot?

heh, heh. I'm using a milwaukee 1/2" drill, that has a cord. Probably 25 years old. Makes sure the grain goes through. But, you better be holding it right.
  18. P

What brand BIAB bag do you use?

I quit using a bag and have started using a 400 Micron basket by Chad at Arborfab. So far, working great. Pros stainless steel 400 micron basket. Woo hoo. Cons Only one I can see is that there is a slightly smaller amount the basket will hold (compared to my old bag anyhow) due to the fact...

Less efficiency with 11 gallon batches vs 5.5 in 15 gallon pot?

Very interesting. I started adding 10% more grains when going for 10 gals into two kegs gave me a bit low OG on the first or second batch. Talked with the best brewer I know at the LHBS, we theorized that the lower OG came from less water causing less conversion. I am getting higher OG numbers...

10gal or 15gal pot for 2.5 and 5 gallon batches

I should have said that I not only double the grain bill but add about another 10% of grain when doing ten gallons in the 15 gallon pot. You will lose some efficiency due to less water in the mash and the extra grain in the mash. If you are so concerned about efficiency that you want to brew...
