    SMaSH recipe critique

Derp, I meant to take that out before posting. My recipe in BeerSmith has 10 lbs 2 row only. OG: 1.048 IBU: 41.2 Color: 3.5 SRM I might just leave the crystal in though. I currently have 2 lbs Crystal 75L and 0.5 lbs Crystal 60L. With 9lbs 2 row and .5lb Crystal 60L I have OG: 1.045 IBU...

Funky after taste after 6 weeks in the bottle

As far as I know the oxygen absorbing caps are used for keeping oxygen out of your bottles and not absorbing oxygen present in your beer. Next time you rack a beer, keep the opening of your siphon tube as close to the bottom of the bucket/carboy as possible to prevent splashing. Once you have...

    How should my cider taste?

I recently attempted my first cider about 3 weeks ago. Last night I opened up my bucket to take a gravity reading and add some cinnamon sticks. It fermented down to about 1.00 and tasted kind of like wine and was slightly carbonated. I thought it was kind of weird that it tasted a little carbed...

Issues with BRY-97? (more than slow start)

I pitched two rehydrated packets of this in my pumpkin ale (OG 1.068) late Monday night/early Tuesday morning. I've been keeping the temps of my swamp cooler between 64-68 as well. When I left for work last night, I still saw no bubbling but it does look like maybe some krausen is forming. It's...

    Show Us Your Label

Nothing fancy here. Made this label for a milk stout I'm giving out (instead of cigars) for the birth of my daughter.

    First time washing yeast

I followed the instructions in the yeast washing sticky. I don't think I let it sit long enough in my bucket when I first added water. I ended up collecting most of what was in there in my large container. I thought I had good separation in the first picture and I was able to decant most of the...

    First time washing yeast

I bottled my milk stout last night and tried to harvest some yeast. The first image below is what I got out of my fermentor after adding some sterilized water. Am I correct in thinking that the middle layer in the first picture is yeast? I decanted the top layer and tried to pour just the middle...

American Pale Ale Three Floyds Zombie Dust Clone

Wouldn't your boil/batch size effect your OG as well? If you want to do a 6 gallon batch you might need to scale ingredients accordingly

    Measuring gravity a day later

Yes, I was worried about wild yeast. I stored my preboil and post boil samples in tupperware containers. This was my second all grain batch so I didn't want to not measure my gravities since I'm still figuring out what my efficiency is. Thanks for the help everyone!

    Measuring gravity a day later

So I'm in the middle of brewing and I broke my hydrometer. I know I should have a second one in case of an accident but I don't. Is it OK to take a sample today, refrigerate it, and measure my gravity tomorrow? I'm not sure if storing it will have any effect on sugar content.

American Pale Ale Three Floyds Zombie Dust Clone

I had a layer of trub up to about the half gallon mark. If you didn't use a hop bag or strain before adding to the fermenter, I would imagine the 5oz of hops would contribute to more trub

American Pale Ale Three Floyds Zombie Dust Clone

So I decided to try this after 1 week of bottle conditioning and 1 day of being in the fridge. The taste is good, possibly too bitter. I don't sense much malt taste, mainly hop bitterness that lingers for a bit. My citra hops were 13.5% instead of 12.4% and BeerSmith put my IBUs at 98. Just...

    Leftover krausen or infection?

American Pale Ale Three Floyds Zombie Dust Clone

Bottling this right now. Did the PM recipe with an OG of 1.062 and FG of 1.016. Sample tastes great and it smells awesome

    Leftover krausen or infection?

I'm thinking this is only some leftover krausen but it looks kind of weird so I figured I'd just ask. I'm racking to my bottling bucket anyway. I took a sample and it tastes fine

Question about Safale S-04 temperature range

I know this is am older thread but figured I'd share my experience so far. I pitched S-04 on Monday evening and 48 hours later, it's still bubbling away pretty vigorously. I had to replace my airlock with a blow off tube because the star san solution kept bubbling out. I've been keeping the...

    Side by side fridge question

Has anyone ever used a side by side fridge with one side for cooling bottles/kegs and the other as a fermentation chamber? I'm thinking about doing this in the near future. If the fridge has a temp setting for both the fridge and freezer, it should be possible to use 2 temperature controllers...
