They take an educated guess. That's it. No mystery there. :ban: Everyone's taste and observation is a bit different. Their input can be a good reference for your beer though. The more people that taste and offer opinions the better. But overall, the competitions are just dog & pony shows.

If you put a check valve below the sightglass, then you'll have an inaccurate reading of how much is still left in the kettle. It will only show how full it was before you opened the ball valve. So with or without the check, the level will be inaccurate. Waste of effort, imo. :mug:

This system does work, and fast. I have a friend who built his own for under $40 using one of those eBay tan pumps. Blichmann is once again price gouging for simple designs... :mug:

I would take everything apart, clean and sanitize. I wouldn't replace anything unless it's needed, except maybe get some check valves for your manifold. Just soak the lines and manifold in water, then rinse in some Starsan. There's probably not any dried up gunk in there. If so, then replace...

Or $2 for a punching balloon at a party store. Fill the balloon with co2. Zip tie it to the opening on a carboy or a fitting on a brew bucket.
