    Extract brands - favorites?

Hmm I hadn’t done the math on that - I’ll have to take a closer look. I got some ipa kits for $23, each containing 9gal LME. I think NB usually charges $33 for a 9 lb jug. Haven’t really done a good survey of prices though

    Extract brands - favorites?

Yea, LME has less ppg than DME but it’s also cheaper. I don’t find it to be any messier than DME. Glad to hear Breiss is good since I just scored a bunch from a NB sale

    Extract brands - favorites?

What is your favorite brand? I’ve mostly brewed kits so far, which means I have a hard time differentiating between brands of extract - different recipes and all. Anybody brew the same recipe with a few different brands?

    Can I mash my extract?

I suppose extract makers probably mash at the optimal temp for efficiency - what’s that, 152? How much does mash temp impact efficiency? Edit: This is probably too oversimplified to be a useful line of reasoning - but I can see Kent88’s point that most extract should be high on the scale of...

    Can I mash my extract?

Aside from conversion, isn’t there some breaking down of long / less fermentable sugars as well? I seem to recall a rambling explanation by Palmer talking about chopping up tree limbs with garden shears or something. Have to admit to glossing over a bit of that...

    Can I mash my extract?

I guess if this worked, it would only allow you to increase attenuation - you couldn’t achieve the effect of mashing higher than the extract maker did. You probably also take an efficiency hit since more sugar is tied up in your spent grain

    Can I mash my extract?

It seems like one of the advantages of AG brewing over extract or partial mash is that an AG brewer can tailor the mash temp to adjust fermentability. So if I do a partial mash, I can have some impact over the 1-2 lbs of grain, but I’m still adding a lot of extract that I can’t adjust for...

To open ferment or not to open ferment?

Daytrippr, Where does extract brewing fit on that spectrum? Should I be squeezing the LME out of the jug under water? (Only kidding, guys!)

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

Nice to know about the super insulation - how long before my fermenter gets mistaken for a lunar lander? Just need a dish now...

To open ferment or not to open ferment?

I’m speaking as a noob here, but as I understand it, lodo techniques claim to produce/preserve some flavor subtleties in particular beer varieties? And since flavor is pretty subjective, it is hard to “prove” claims like that. At least if you’re trying to write a research paper. BTW, this thread...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

One idea I was thinking about for fermenter insulation was to put your carboy or bucket into a 10 gallon igloo water cooler. It looks like a 6 gallon bucket would fit inside and even allow the lid to be put on—but you’d likely need to cut a hole in the lid for your airlock. However, you gotta do...

    compact peltier cooled carboy setup

This is a wicked cool build - I’ve heard that TEC lifespan can be improved by mounting with a compressive preload. Also, I wonder if the “bang bang” control is too hard on the TECs? I don’t have direct experience, so can’t say for certain

To open ferment or not to open ferment?

I wonder if you could make an “open” fermenter out of a big IBC tote or maybe a 55 gallon barrel with a removable lid? The point being that the container would be large enough to simulate an open ferment, but it would in fact be a closed container. Going off of Vale’s description of wort flow...

Plumbers, what am I doing wrong? copper chiller build

Elfmaze, Can you say a little more about the design of your chiller? It looks totally different than other designs I’ve seen (admittedly not many)

Plumbers, what am I doing wrong? copper chiller build

Why no fingers in the flux? Is that because it’s bad for your solder joint or because it’s bad for your finger?

To open ferment or not to open ferment?

Vale, What is the significance of the square vat? Is the effect just that surface area versus volume of a vat changes that character of the fermentation?

Question - Controlling Temp During Active Fermentation

Or by regulating the temperature of the room low enough for your coldest ferment, and setting up independent heaters on each separate fermenter.

Question - Controlling Temp During Active Fermentation

I like that test run idea - might try that out once I get temp logging set up. I plan to use a thermowell sensor in addition to one taped to my heater - the idea is to write a PID algorithm that uses the taped heater for the PI terms and the thermowell for the integral term. That ought to...

    Crazy Idea...Centrifuge Fermenter

Skip the carboy all together and ferment in a washer (FIAW). Bonus: after you rack, it’s just one button to clean!
