all-grain or anything else. I'm looking for the right combination of malt to make a really orange brew. Any help?

Splitting a 5 Gallon Batch between Kegs and Bottles

I haven't done this but I've heard that bottling off the keg works fine. If you did that you wouldn't have to worry about the sugar at all.

Can you link where Reevy told you how to do this?

    Getting Impatient...

...with the sit and wait method. I thought I could wait a week for my Pliny the Elder clone, but my other keg had a leak in the line and I'd love to have it ready tomorrow night. I hooked it up at 12 PSI on Monday. If I shake it for 15 mintues or so will it be carbed by tomorrow night?

    My First Explosioin. Thoughts?

I had been using a blow off on my "big brews" but I didn't use one on the Oatmeal Stout I just brewed. I guess making a starter helped as it blew off the airlock less than 12 hours after I pitched. I've lost a lot of wort. Should I do anything like add water, wort, and/or yeast to make up...

    Louisville, KY brew club

I went to my first meeting last week. The Louisville Lager's Homebrew Club usually meets at the BBC Taproom. At last week's meeting there was a speaker from the Louisville Water Company, then they had the general meeting where they talked about upcoming events and information surrounding the...

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

That's what I was thinking. And then I was reading the slanting yeast thread, where you freeze the yeast and the best claim it could make was that it stored yeast up to a year. You can only draw two conclusions from this: 1) The OP of the slanting yeast thread underestimated the viability of...

What do you do with bad batches?

Blend it with a fruit beer. Sweetness masks a lot of off flavors.

    Do you use a starter?

The duder at my LHBS told me starters are not necessary and not always a good idea but reading this place it seems like some of you swear by them. Where do you stand?

    My First IIPA

Thanks for the input. I've adjusted the recipe a bit. I don't want too many bittering hops, I like more aroma hops so I did add some there. Besides, once you go over 100 IBUs you're just wasting hops, right? Any idea what my ABV is? I would like to get it around 9%. if not higher.

    Yeast Washing Illustrated

So what's the cut-off? I have a two-hearted clone that I'm getting ready to rack. It's about 7% abv. Should I try to wash those tired yeasties?

    Top of the Hops Reviews

I went to the one in Louisville. The selection was good. There wasn't as much swag available as I would've expected. The beer did not last the whole time. I left an hour early and by that time I'd say more than half the vendors were out of beer. That said, I still tried a ton of beers, got...

    Dry hopping question

When dry hopping with pellets do I need to stir them in? I know it's not a good idea to introduce oxygen into the wort at this point, so should I just plop them in and let it go? Thanks in advance.

    greedy with you beer?

My friends are getting a little spoiled. Everytime they come over I cook them a homecooked meal and serve them homebrew. I'm not sure they appreciate how much work and not to mention money that takes. One of my buddies came over the other day and we went to pick up some brew because I was...

    My First IIPA

What do you all think? Is it too many hops? An online calculator told me it'd be around 134 IBU and that was without the dry hopping. It's basically an amalgam of my two favorite IIPAs Hopslam and dfh 90min. 5 gallon batch 10 pounds plain light dry malt extract 1 lb Crystal Malt 40...

    Hops (the restaurant chain)

I ordered a Bells Oberon at a restaurant and they gave me a Budweiser. I still wonder if they did it on purpose or not. They were pretty quick to give me another beer for free.
